Title: New scoring system
Post by: Dingo on September 22, 2011, 05:11:09 PM
They changed the scoring system so that there is one point per 15 minutes for each core that runs an application.  There is also one point for every 15 Mb of data that is processed. See this thread. (http://theskynet.org/blog/?p=356)

You will see that I asked for clarification about Hyper threading as my i7's have 4 cores but are in effect 8 cores.  They have confirmed that I could run 8 applications as long as I had enough memory for the 50mb each application.

They have also put into affect a system where you will not get credit if you have too many applications running on a PC.

Thanks for the heads up. Did they mention how many applications are too many? I assume its way more than my 9?

One application per core or 2 per core if hyper threading is turned on in the Bios.  So if you have a 4 core computer that is not hyper threaded then you can run 4 of their applications.  If it is hyper threaded then you can run 8.  I am running 11 at the moment. 1) i7 930 quad core hyperthreaded = 8  2) C2D laptop is running 2, and 3) Linux Q6600 hyper threaded but only running one application as it is also my web server.  My dashboard has said that I am running 13 for a couple of hours now but do not know how it gets that number ??

The Team is really moving up the ladder, even though there are just seven of us.  We were down in the 60's a day or two ago and we were at 35th yesterday and when I just looked we were in 19 (http://www.theskynet.org/leaderboard?offset=15&alliance=1)th and rising.  Good job Team, even though it is not BOINC I have the points bug now on this one.  I am still crunching a lot of BOINC as well doing Primegrid, Yoyo and DnetC.

Yep, team is going great.

Sometimes it gives no credits at all for many hours and then jumps up a bit. Seems to be giving me less than their formula but seeing as the team is rising up the ranks it must be doing the same for everybody. Running 3 browser applications and for BOINC, currently doing WCG on CPU and MilkyWay on GPU.

Haha, how weird is the trophies system, you can go for hundreds of points without getting any more, then get 3 or 4 within the space of fifty points.:crazy

Wondering if there has been a major crash on skynet.  On 2 of my computers my 525 credits have suddenly become a great fat 0

Yes something awry at the moment. Website not available at all here for the last hour or so.

Hopefully they'll fix it up soon and it won't continue to go down on weekends like MilkyWay sometimes does.

Edit: It's back up, all my points are intact and I have another trophy.;D

Normal service resumed over here too, and credits restored.  Onwards and upwards again.

We are in 16th position but by tomorrow the Team should be in the top 15 (http://www.theskynet.org/leaderboard) going by the credits we are gaining on the 15th spot

Is it time for a call to arms?   Lurking about 12 places behind us is SkyNet Francophone.  It just won't do to have them outscore us on our own turf.   :aus1:

EDIT:  l'avertissement!!!  Du français sont à venir

I don't think we can stop them if they really try.  They have many more members than us on BOINC but you can't see in this one so maybe we have a chance.  I will keep an eye on their credits over a period and see if we are keeping pace with them.

Now if they will only let me join the BOINC@AUSTRALIA alliance my 139 credits will help lol.
Every time I click the join button it takes me to a page that says "you are not in an alliance".
Have messaged them but it seems that they get hundreds of messages a day and have only one person answering them.

They have a forum now with a Troubleshooting board here:  http://www.theskynet.org/account/forum (http://www.theskynet.org/account/forum)   Give it a try you might get an answer quicker.

The Team should slip into 12th place today going on our points average over the last couple of days.   :rocks

We are now in 10th place (http://www.theskynet.org/account/ladders) and slowly making our way up.  Sooner or later we will hit the wall but still progressing up the charts.

Hi all,

I just joined TheSkyNet and our Alliance there.
Good thing too, because I originally tried installing WCG on the work computer to make use of an extra machine, but unfortunately, installing third party programs is frowned upon.
So i went through the trouble of trying to explain to our IT deparment boys what WCG does and I'd like to install it.

They gave me this kinda look... was half way between a smirk and confusion. I also thought I heard a grunt somewhere.

I guess using java is useful in instances such as this.

Now... let's MOW down position number SEVEN!   >:D

SkyNet doesn't want to run on my computer any more, I login and click start and the window opens up but the start button doesn't change to a green tick.
Had 6 windows open all afternoon the other day and my credits didn't move, although my download usage did.

Den.

Just noticed that the French Team that always passes us in projects and gloats about it is in this project as well in #29 LAlliance Francophone.  We are currently in 8th place but are slipping a bit.

I changed back to 2 SkyNets. I had reduced it to 1 when it was idling for so long. Might give 3 a go tomorrow.;D

hi kashi,

i wouldn't recommend it, because I've got position number 10 in my cross hairs.
and you are that number 10 lol

Haha, first HokeyWB accelerates and zooms past while my SkyNets sat idle and now this. ;D
Lookout though, my unlimited was turned on today, I'll be turning up the wick pretty soon now.

My copper eye in CEP2 has finally made it out of being stuck in pending for 10 days and my red eye in DSFL is about a day's crunching away from pending status. Would be closer but I was sidetracked by a little burst on DNA@Home, work has been so rare there and it absolutely flies on Linux 64.

Hi all,

When running multiple clients, do you find that, say if you opened 4 clients.
The next morning, it might drop down to 2 or 3 clients.

Then, because you don't know which of the 4 original opened clients has been dropped, you then close all 4 and then reopen another 4 new clients.

Does that happen to anybody?

Haven't had any drop out for a while but I've only been running 1 or 2 after I noticed it chewing up my quota. I had one stall (no CPU activity) for a long time recently with the other one working.

Perhaps it is more likely to happen if you are running a higher number of the web applications. I did have a few dropouts very early in the project when I was running 5. Also had some that failed to connect and dropped out almost immediately.

Will see what happens tomorrow when I go up to 3. It does use 560MB of memory per application, so perhaps when you are doing something memory intensive and don't have enough memory the Java application terminates. For example if you were doing multiple BOINC projects with some high memory tasks and had "leave in memory" selected. Pausing BOINC to do something else that also used lots of memory would increase the chances of running out of memory.

Maybe overcommitting the CPU could also be a cause of the Java app terminating. Each web application usually uses only one core when fully active but I have seen very occasional spikes to 24% which is 2 cores on this computer. I'm currently running 5 BOINC cores and 2 SkyNets, so one core is kept free to keep things cooler and responsive. I noticed a great deal of screen lag when I was running MilkyWay and 5 SkyNets. I've been in power conservation mode for a while now so am no longer doing any BOINC GPU processing. It so quiet it's unbelievable, strangely it makes the ringing in my ears seem much louder.;D Excellent for sleeping though.

I think if you click on the Browser client Message "Show your client" and there is nothing there then it is closed.  I think the application is getting better at knowing how amny cores are available and if you open too many clients it shuts them over time. As per Kashi's comment memory is also used and might also be a reason.

I went to visit my Daughter and Son on Sunday and today so had all my computers off except the web server and I see that the Alliance is in 7th place now.  :congrats :congrats  Big jump to 6th place as they have over 36K credits on us.  I also got a new Trophie (http://www.theskynet.org/images/trophies/041.png)

Wow, 30k credits.
Kinda also looks like the spider from Simcity or that monster in War of the Worlds.

I'll find out in about... 5 months   Bashhead

Well it was stalled again for all last night, so I shut it down. Started it up this morning and it's cooking with gas so now I've got 4 cores on SkyNet and 4 on WCG.
Hope it keeps going for a bit longer today.
