Title: Project Updates
Post by: JugNut on May 30, 2013, 12:35:47 PM
Well v7 apps have arrived.  2 of my PC's have app_info's so no change there, but one PC I left with standard apps & just used a app_config for multi unit crunching & it now has v7 app & v7 work.  So far the problems are,  a pile of transfer errors,  & i'm being sent wrong work (cuda 5.0 instead of cuda 4.2) but that's nothing major as  I believe the the wrong work will still crunch OK just at a slower rate, so except like I said the re-emergence of http download errors so far nothing to major.  Also been sent cuda 3.2, 4.2 & 5.0 apps when I only needed the cuda 4.2 app?   Havn't got around to setting up my ATI cards yet,  I think I will leave it till I see which way the wind is blowing.(so to speak)   Or maybe go Nvidia only this AA.  Hopefully these are only early teething problems that will be sorted soon.

:greet

Please post if you see any probs or read any juicy news.

Crunch-on JN

EDIT: Just lost ALL my 6.10 work,  some 30+ WU's without a trace.  I now have only v7 work ???   I'll resist the urge to put an app_info in & go back to the old 6.10's.  For a while i'll  just wait an see what happen's with the new stuff.

I just checked and I have no V7 apps as yet and all mt v6 tasks are running on both optimised and non optimised applications so no problem for me as yet.  There is a post on the SETI forum iin the news about the change

Your BOINC client should automatically download it in the next few days. No need to abort any current work you are doing.

We've released versions for Windows, MacOS and Linux, and four versions for NVIDIA graphics cards running under windows, and versions for ATI graphics card running under Windows and Linux.

My thanks to the KWSN/lunatics folks for getting this done and especially to Raistmer, Jason, Josef, Urs, Claggy, Mike, Richard, and too many beta testers to name.

Tomorrow I'll post explaining why we wanted version 7 and what's different about the analysis it does.

From the SETI web site the new applications for version 7.  Good to see they have standard ATI apps for Linux.

Well, my card may start warming up this cold place LOL

BTW, interesting to note in the post highlighted by Dingo that a new installer is on its way. Means Ol' bonehead won't have to worry about app_info etc  :cheers:

I now have the V7 apps running for the stock standard CPU and ATI on my Windows 7  PC and the duel HD5850's.  I am running only one task per GPU as I do not have an app_info.xml at this time.

I see on the SETI forum that there appears to be problems with the standard CUDA GPU's but I do not have a windows PC with CUDA cards.

Lionel what is your thoughts on the standard CUDA apps ???

Just added a app_config.xml to my Win7 system running standard CPU and GPU Windows apps and now running 2 GPU tasks per GPU.

<app_config>
<app>
<name>setiathome_v7</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>.04</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

Based on my reading the v6 CUDA apps had issues on the Kepler cards (unless a particular system variable was set), but I've got a whole heap of valid v7 CUDA WUs now (only started crunching after the v7 rollout).  Is there any thoughts on stock vs optimised apps (pending the installer release on Monday)?

I don't think the Optimised apps are out for V7 yet.  I am waiting for the Linux CUDA Optimised apps for my two linux machines that are currently still running version 6 work.

SETI's  down already.  :furious:   I have one PC with only 3 WU's ,  not sure why?  But it will be sucking air any minute now.  Early days I guess but not a good start to the AA.

EDIT: Just checked another PC completely empty of GPU WU's with only some CPU one to crunch on ???  I'll wait a half hour & if no work will start crunch something else.   On the last PC with work I have 2 Astropulse WU's that are going crazy bouncing between 17 - 30% usage?  (Nvidia openCL type)  Not a happy camper ATM.

Hmmm my buffer is set for 3 days

Not a good start but the whole of SETI is down even the web site so it is most probably a network issue ???

I have enough work for a day or two I think ??

EDIT  Make that work for a day.

I have had to start running POGS on two of my Linux PC's as I have run out of CPU work.  Still running SETI V6 GPU on them though for a while at least.  It may be some time till it comes back up seeing that it is 0 dark hundred on Friday night over there.  :shock :thumbdown: :faint:

Yes it came second on the Poll http://forum.boinc-australia.net/index.php?topic=1461.0 (http://forum.boinc-australia.net/index.php?topic=1461.0).

I am hoping that SETI comes back soon, but POGS is a good Aussie project till it does.

Running this on my I7 7950.   Seems to have sparked things up a bit.

<app_config>
    <app>
    <name>setiathome_v7</name>
    <gpu_versions>
    <gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
    <cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
    </gpu_versions>
    </app>

    <max_concurrent>6</max_concurrent>
    <gpu_versions>
    <gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
    <cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
    </gpu_versions>
    </app>

    <app>
    <name>astropulse_v6</name>
    <max_concurrent>6</max_concurrent>
    <gpu_versions>
    <gpu_usage>.33</gpu_usage>
    <cpu_usage>1.0</cpu_usage>
    </gpu_versions>
    </app>

    </app_config>

crunching 3 astropulse WUs at the same time.   Have yet to see anything from version 7.

Title: Re: Project Updates
Post by: Dingo on June 03, 2013, 12:54:08 PM
LawryB -   If you are using app_info.xml to get version 6 work, (Astropulse) then you will not see v7 work till you add the v7 apps to the app_info.

For WINDOWS, if you want to get all V7 work, GPU and CPU, then you need to finish all the V6 work, or abort them.   STOP BOINC.  Copy the app_config.xml file to another folder for now. Then rename / delete the app_info.xml.   I went even further and removed seti, which clears the folder then deletes it from the system,  then attached to seti and the GPU and CPU V7 work will start on it's own if you have "SETI@home v7: yes" selected in your preferences.  There are standard versions of ATI and CUDA for windows in version 7.  Put back the app_config.xml file.

1) Finish all the units.
2) Turn off BOINC.
3) Delete app_info.xml
4) Start BOINC.
5) In the BOINC Manager go to Projects tab, select SETI@home, click Reset project in the Commands panel (it contains, from the top: Update, Suspend, Allow new tasks, Reset project, etc.).

For 5.  I removed SETI and Attached again.

Well myself, I am running stock ATI apps for MB V7 and AP V6, the V7 credits are still doing the adjusting thing, so it may take awhile for that to come good.

Otherwise all is running well

Title: Re: Project Updates

I think the important message here is This update will happen automatically, unless you use a special version you got from another web site.

QuoteSETI@home version 8 has been released. This version finally gives us the ability to process data from multiple sources, including the Green Bank Telescope. That means we'll be ready for data from Breakthrough Listen when it's available.

We're releasing the versions for CPUs first. We'll release versions for graphics processing units (GPUs) and Android devices as they come available. We're releasing slowly so as not to overtax our download server. This update will happen automatically, unless you use a special version you got from another web site.

We've also made small changed to our science code to improve the Gaussian fitting routines. This means version 8 results are not compatible with version 7. So if you use a version of SETI@home you got from another site, or if you compile your own version, you'll need to get or build a version 8 application. I'm sure link will be made available in the Number Crunching forum.

A shout out to the volunteer developers (especially Urs, Jason and Raistmer) and all the beta testers for helping out.

Happy New Year!

Also in the same thread was this statement.

QuoteWe plan to stop making new v7 work within a few days, because v8 really is more accurate when searching for Gaussians. You can keep v7 until you run out of v7 work.

I believe it has something to do with the protests at Berkeley in the USA in an endeavour to stop a speaker sharing her views there.

Some users have been threatening and sending abusive messages to the admins of SETI, and threatening to boycott the project if something isn,t done.

Alas as the admin have stated, Berkeley really do not have a lot to do with SETI and these people are just wasting their breath, as Berkeley would not pay any attention anyhow.

Admins are basically saying leave us alone as we are not involved and do not have any influence, and we are just here for the science.

I believe this is a basic gist of what is happening.

Please correct me if I am wrong anyone:)

Ah, that would be Ann Coulter. Berkeley loves free speech as long as it agrees with their socialist politics.  :jester: Much ado about nothing.
Thanks! I do not look at SETI very often.

Hi all,

Would this app_config work?

<app_config>
    <app>
    <name>setiathome_v6</name>
    <gpu_versions>
    <gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
    <cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>

    <gpu_versions>
    <gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
    <cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
    </gpu_versions>

    <app>
    <name>astropulse_v7</name>
    <max_concurrent>6</max_concurrent>
    <gpu_versions>
    <gpu_usage>.33</gpu_usage>
    <cpu_usage>1.0</cpu_usage>

I know AMD cards aren't that great with SETI but I'm sure I can squeeze a bit more out of this Vega 56.

If you are using a Windows machine then you can use the Optimized apps from Lunatics http://lunatics.kwsn.info/index.php?action=downloads;cat=9 (http://lunatics.kwsn.info/index.php?action=downloads;cat=9) and use the Windows Installer and if you select the correct hardware during the installation it will create the app_config for you.

Greetings All

For those that are crunching or attempting to crunch SETI, they are having major problems as per the following thread.

https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84416 (https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84416)

Be wise to move GPU/CPU's over to a back up project for the time being.
