Title: POEM Looks to be closing down :(
Post by: JugNut on October 05, 2016, 03:26:46 AM
As the title says POEM looks to be closing by Christmas,  maybe even sooner.  Admin talks about this being the last batch of GPU work units?

Link to the announcement yesterday.. http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/forum_thread.php?id=1280#11416 (http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/forum_thread.php?id=1280#11416)

POEM will be missed by many in the community as it is one of only two boinc projects that use GPU's to accelerated there medical research,  now there's just GPUgrid.  I hope GPUgrid has plenty of work as it's the most likely place that POEM GPU users will move to after POEM closes.

Drats!!! I had planned to get a billion credits milestone there one day, there's no chance of that now :(

Crunch-on  :crazy

Sad news.

Yep, I will miss it as it was one of the first non-WCG projects I worked on. Just GPUGrid left for med projects and it does not support lower-end GPU's. Looks like a lot of GPU'ers also went to Milky way and is causing them problems (too many connections).  Einstein was having some problems yesterday but do not know if it is related. Asteroids is also suspending work for a bit while they clean up their databases. Slim pickings. :(

EDIT: Rosetta may be a GPU option but I have not been there in years and do not know the state of their GPU requirements.

That's a pity.

Prime Grid has a few subprojects that will keep your GPU's working .   Not massive credits but will keep your numbers turning.

Thanks for the info JugNut.
I'll be sorry to see them go, I have crunched for them pretty regularly for a long time.
