Title: BOINC@TACC
Post by: Dataman on March 07, 2019, 02:13:35 AM
BOINC (Dr Anderson) has published a paper about BOINC *yawn* and you can read it here:

https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1903/1903.01699.pdf

In it he mentions a project I had not heard of; BOINC@TACC (Texas Advanced Computing Center). I went there and signed up.

https://boinc.tacc.utexas.edu/index.php

It is a wrapper project and here are some notes:

1. There is no work yet.
2. It uses VBox
3. It does not export stats to BOINC yet and I am not sure they plan to do so. (?)
4. It randomizes your username (e. g. mine is "Dataman (CMx1iDdIIT)" Not sure how this would work for the stat's sites. (?)
5. It is funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF). TACC is an old and established organization and has done contract work for NASA.
6. It is CPU only.
7.. There is no BOINC@Australia team there.

@Dingo: When you have a chance please open a team at TACC. Thanks.

They have set a limit on Team Creation as you can only create a Team after you have completed a task.  There have not been any tasks available since I joined, but I have my machines ready to accept tasks when they bevome available and I will create the Team.

Maybe they are going to run the BOINC wide Teams script which creates all the registered Teams which we are one of??

OK, cool. I too have it on a machine. Too bad it is VBox.

If anyone in the Team has credit can they please create the Team so no one else creates it.  I can't seem to get any work and you need to process at least one unit of work to create a Team..  I also can't search by your name because it uses a mixed string of data instead of a name.  I have had my scrambled name changed to Dingo so members can at least seach for me to contact me.

Info for the Team:

Team name, text version
BOINC@AUSTRALIA

Team name, HTML version

I check them each morning. No work or any posts. No indication of anything in the near future.

No tasks for me either.  :pcwhack:

I got two tasks and both validated, both were crunched on Linux 64 vbox64_mt and averaged about 155 credits per hour, 2X CPU's, if I could get that many tasks.

I have created the Team now that I have done a task.

I joined the team. Still no wu's but I am already running LHC on vbox on that machine so that might be the problem. I do not know if I can run two different projects on vbox. I am actually doing good with LHC for a change so I will wait until TACC has a steady stream of wu's.

I received 150 tasks yesterday; 129 valid, 20 pending, 1 error and 2,473 credits. Tasks ran ~ 1.5 - 2.00 minutes. I think they ran two threads but I did not see them run.
I still do not know what these wu do.

EDIT: They use 4 CPU's.

I finally received some wu's and they ran in about 25 minutes. I got 196 with 194 valid and 2 errors. Credits are around 25/hour. Wu's are still few and far between but if you are interested in this project you may want to keep an eye on it. You need to check the export stat's box in your profile. Default is no export.

It appears their stat's export still does not work even with the box checked.
