So have the Ubuntu box up and running.... TheGnat is being used at the moment.

Have a D-Link ADSL2+ router that has provision for an ethernet connection. Could I use that directly from newbie, or should I just connect the newbie to TheGnat via ethernet cable and have newbie sort out getting onto the net (as was done via Wubi at the moment)? or am I showing my complete and utter lack ok networking knowledge

Which DLink router is it?  How many network ports on it?  How does it connect to the Gnat?

If you want to connect TheBee (?) via TheGnat, you will need a crossover cable between the computers AND some sharing software running on TheGnat.  Plus the quad will only be able to access the net when the Gnat is switched on, connected and has the router/sharing software running.  Not ideal.

Best is to have an ADSL modem/router with multiple ethernet ports (one for each computer) or at least one ethernet port connected to a multi port switch to which the computers connect.

We can actually go further than that (insert firewall/proxy between switch and modem).  Many modern ADSL Gateways/routers have a built in firewall though.

It is a DSL-502T and has a USB port (currently used by TheGnat) and an Ethernet port. Have ethernet cable.

My idea was(is) to have both up and running at the same time using the KVM to switch between them (newbie doing 64bit projects and TheGnat doing 32bit projects) I do have the disc that came with the router, which does have an inbuilt firewall, but I'll bet even money that Ubuntu won't like it *sigh*

veebee

just plug the Ubuntu machine straight into the ethernet port and it will (should) work..no need to "install" anything etc.

I just plugged all four of mine straight into my D-link DSL-G604T and off they went !

Looking at the datasheet for that modem you should be able to run one on the USB and one on the Ethernet port.

So plug GnuBee into the ethernet port with a regular Cat5 or Cat6 cable.  You may need to do some configuration (see your modem's manual)

But once you get the third computer you'll need to look at using a switch...

Thanks Guys

Shall now go and see what happens using the KVM and connecting direct from the newbie to the router. Will let you know either way  ;D

Now have two puters connected to the web and both running at the same time  :worship :worship to WMY and Veebs

Newbie is downloading 247 amendments/updates as I speak.

Now..... in Symantic....... shouldn't it list all the stuff that is inside the pooter and also available from all the websites used to get stuff from??? Cause last time I looked (about five minutes ago, before it started this massive download) nothing was  showing therein.

yoda

I think you mean Synaptic :)   And yes, it should.  But might need to update first.  And to get BOINC showing you will need to enable the "backports" repository ("Unsupported updates")

Furlozza

Uhuh... that was what I meant

It is now showing details, so downloaded and installed Boinc 6.2.12 (the good version *grin* for scaredy cats)

Downloaded and isntalled grkellm............ but I know that I have to get some sensors up and running in ubuntu to get that operating properly (a hint for those who have several boxes running using gkrellm..... use different themes for each box*grin*), but can't recall just what they were, soooooooooooo shall check out ubuntu forums (damn... password is in the ubuntu side of TheGnat *grrrrrr*) or see what happens here :jester:

yoda

install lm-sensors, then run sensors-detect:

Open a terminal, then run these 3 commands:
sudo apt-get install lm-sensors
sudo sensors-detect
sudo modprobe coretemp

Furlozza

Thanks WMY... much shorter than what I went through (know I shoulda hung around... ah well....) but gkrellm is now up and running.

Was going to let TheGnat get up to 200000 crs off his bat, but......... methinks I shall do a bit of...... re-attaching  biggrin

and then??? well, unless someone has come up with the real name of the beast/gnu/newbie..... guess I've saved meself a couple of Karmas :jester:

However... there are a few due..... sooooooooooooooo to WMY and Veebs ...+1 each
