POEM@Home is a not-for-profit project which aims to research and predict protein structure.  It is run by the Biomolecular Structure Prediction Group at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, one of Europe's largest research institutes.

Project Summary
Proteins are the nanoscale machinery of all the known cellular life. Amazingly, these large biomolecules with up to 100,000 atoms fold into unique three-dimensional shapes in which they function. These functions include all cellular chemistry (eg metabolism), energy conversion (eg photosynthesis) and transport, signal processing in the brain, immune response and many others, often with an efficiency unmatched by any man-made process. Protein malfunction is often related to diseases and thousands of disease-related proteins have been identified to date, many with still unknown structure. To understand, control or even design proteins we need to study protein structure, which is experimentally much harder to obtain than the information about the chemical composition or sequence of a specific protein. By joining this project you will contribute to predicting the biologically active structure of proteins, understanding the signal-processing mechanisms when the proteins interact, understanding diseases related to protein malfunction, and developing new drugs on the basis of the three-dimensions structure of proteins.

POEM (Protein Optimization with free Energy Methods) implements a computational realisation of the thermodynamic hypothesis that won C. B. Anfinsen the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1972.

Applications
POEM applications run on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X supporting Intel-compatible CPUs.  See the full list here: http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/apps.php
The application requires at least 30MB disk space.
