VR World is reporting that leading Chinese display panel maker Beijing Oriental (BOE) has created world's first 98" LCD display with a 7680 x 4320 pixels (8K) resolution. The panel offers 1.07 billion color support via 8-bit plus dithering, 500 nits brightness, and a 1200:1 contrast ratio.

I also read some time ago that 8K panels were going to be coming out almost on top of 4K panels (or shortly there after).

Very Nice indeed match that with a 9000 series Geforce..

I always thought 1080p TV's were a bit short sighted, by the time I bought my first 1080p HD TV I'd had a 23inch 1080p monitor for 18 months and they were available long before that.

Now how many TV station do we have with full 1080p HD TV support? None!  Only one free to air channel comes close at 1080i (channel one).  There are a few on Foxtel I guess if you pay extra & have the IQ box but still 1080i.  But 7680 x 4320 would be a dream come true thats for sure.

If they're looking for testers, sign me up scotty.

EDIT: Do they have 1080p or better TV stations in other countries?

I was of the impression each network had one of it's channels at HD resolution.  From memory there's a limit on the available bandwidth which prevents a full 1080p stream, hence 1080i in most cases.  Whether or not the source material is at that resolution is another matter entirely!

By geez your right Scott there are a few more HD channels than last time I checked, but sadly the vast majority still seem to be 576i SD though.

In Canada we've been years behind the UK (Australia too?), at our 480 compared to the UK standard of 576 since about 1967, I think, and High definition here used to be considered 720 until recently.  As JugNut says no matter what it's called, no program comes off better than what it was originally filmed/taped at.  We got a lot of catching to do methinks!  :cry2:

Hi Neil,
Just out of interest, I was wondering how many TV stations you guys receive there in Canada?  And do you have free to air TV?  Also can you get US TV stations as well?

Neil G

Hi JugNut.  I don't know the No. of TV stations in total, but here in our area we have access to over 100, mostly from the US.  Our local company, Conuma Cable Systems is the carrier of both TV and Internet.  We get 6 HDTV (1080) and a bunch of standard (480) stations at present.  Also we have pay-per-view (x-rated) movie channels, should you want that.  Channel availability varies by region depending also on which cable company you have in the area.  Satellite TV is popular here on the west coast of Vancouver Island, but reception can be spotty at times due to storms.  What is "free to air" TV?  Haven't heard that term before.  Hope this answers your question.  Don't know if Dingo is still up in the interior of the Province, but his experience should be similar.  If you have any more questions just feel free to ask!    :can     Neil

They are the free (no payment at all) digital TV stations transmitted on VHF and UHF channels once used by analogue TV.

Thanks for the explanation Mike.   When Canada (and the US) went to digital, people without access to cable TV had to get a converter box to receive over-the-air broadcasts on their TVs.  We (being in a remote location) have only our National service (CBC) transmitted from a dish antenna, so we switched to cable many years ago.  Some went to Satellite, as we considered doing at the time, but chose cable.  Thanks again Mike.

Best and Cheers

JugNut

Thanks for the detailed explanation Neil.  So it seems like a similar situation than us then with cable TV having 100+ channels & even the change over to digital looks much the same. Interesting

Thanks again for the info mate and sorry for the late reply.

Neil G

Late Reply ?   Cripes, since you are on the other side of the International Date Line, time doesn't count--Tahsis, BC, Canada being 17 hours behind Brisbane, Australia.  No worries/cares about lag time. At least both our countries are on the same planet (and we speak English and drink beer LOL).
