One of my budddies did a WU in 179 sec on a GTX 1050 Ti and the same WU I did in 829 sec on my GTX 1080 T1.  I looked at his Work Unit and he seems to be running a new Optimised app  that I cannot find.

I found a thread on Seti about it but could not find where to download.  I am a bit lazy and stopped looking after a while but if anyone finds it ley me know as it seems to be a good one.

This is what I noted on his work unit

Hi Dingo

Thats the linux Petri Special, there is a forum on it on the Seti@Home website

Here is the Link - https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=80636#1834548

There is a bit of reading to do, also TBar made a one stop installer, which is referenced in the same thread.

I was trialling it out about this time last year and the GTX 960 and GTX 950 were beating my GTX 1060 as they were on it and the 1060 was not.

Alas it came to a grinding halt when the 960 and 950 were put back to a windows machine (Family wanted Win 7) alas I lost out lol.

Regards

Greetings Dingo

Please note, I am running Mint 19.1 Cinnamon edition, using the BOINC PPA and NVIDIA PPA 418 drivers.

Once Linux is up an running and you have BOINC loaded and attached to SETI (set no new tasks), then close BOINC.

The file you need is BOINC.7z

Okay this is how I did it.

Extract the files, a new folder will be created called BOINC.

Do all the following under user - Administrator/Root

In Mint, you can right click on a folder and the option pops up (I think Ubuntu has the same option)

Navigate into this new folder called BOINC/Projects/Seti

Copy all thats inside this folder

Navigate to your /var/lib/boinc-client/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu folder and paste.

Now dont forget to change ownership of these files to boinc by right clicking, properties and under permissions. owner and group must be changed.

Edit the app_info file, to change the following lines to read

<app>
    <name>setiathome_v8</name>
 </app>
   <file_info>
     <name>setiathome_x41p_V0.98b1_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu_cuda101</name>
     <executable/>
   </file_info>
   <app_version>
     <app_name>setiathome_v8</app_name>
     <platform>x86_64-pc-linux-gnu</platform>
     <version_num>801</version_num>
     <plan_class>cuda10</plan_class>
     <cmdline></cmdline>
     <coproc>
       <type>NVIDIA</type>
       <count>1</count>
     </coproc>
     <avg_ncpus>0.1</avg_ncpus>
     <max_ncpus>0.1</max_ncpus>
     <file_ref>
        <file_name>setiathome_x41p_V0.98b1_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu_cuda101</file_name>
         <main_program/>
     </file_ref>
   </app_version>

Leave all the other part of the app_info intact.

Save and close.

Reboot and Start BOINC, make sure you set your cache to zero on both entries.  Allow Seti new work.

If all has gone to plan is should crunch 1 work unit successfully. - Set to No New Tasks again

Its been awhile, but when rebooting, I would do a shutdown and disconnect the 2nd 1660ti.

Once you are crunching on the 1st 1660ti, then I would do a shutdown and reconnect the 2nd 1660ti.

Power up, start BOINC, check event log to see if it is recognised.

If it is then you can start SETI and away you go.  Look out they will fly on those cards.

Cheers - Any probs leave a message and I will try to help as much as possible.

Also on the SETI forums there is this link to follow to ask some more serious questions

Thanks tazzduke I will give it a go today and let you know.  :thanks1:

EDIT: Still going, waisted about an hour or moreas I found out that Ubuntu 14 does not support the drivers for the 1660Ti as it is too old and it did not see the video cards.   :banghead

          In the process of downloading 18:04 Desktop and start again.

Ok took me hours to get it working finding the right version of Ubuntu and the nvidia drivers.  In the end, the first task was almost the same time as the Lunatics optimised app and windows 10.  It might get better I guess will keep an eye on it.

I just have one 1660Ti running at the moment but am about to shutdown and install the other one:

New Linux machine 01-rack   https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=8765077

EDIT:  They are starting to get quicker now

Greetings Dingo

Excellent to hear that you are up and running.

Dont worry, they will start chewing through them pretty fast.

Hey Dingo

I also forgot, you have to give 1 x CPU to each GTX 1660ti as well, so I see you have it on the 6 core machine, so in other words you only use 4 cores for CPU crunching.

That is the only restriction with using this special APP.

I dont have an issue with this, as the 2 Crunchers doing SETI, only do GPU crunching.  I see no point as I dont have fast enough CPU's that can do a SETI CPU workunit in less than an hour.

I know of some of the big crunchers over at SETI, with their Threadrippers which are doing their CPU tasks in between 40-60 mins a task, thats okay when you have 16+ cores to play with lol.

Cheers

Now that the Primegrid Challenge is over I converted another WIN 10 machine with a 1080 Ti to Ununtu 18.04 and the new STI app.  Will see how it goes,as it looks even quicker than the 1660Ti  ??  The other machine is really crunching hard on the 1660's and doing each wu in between 59 - 90 seconds.

You are gonna smash it now Dingo, by the time the WOW challenge will have started you will be up around the 200k RAC, I reckon.  Does take a bit for the RAC on SETI to climb though.

Excellent work.  :gt

:holy-moly

Around 60sec/wu!!  :faint: That's unreal!
I'm not sure what the best setup is for my Radeon VII. The results are all over the place. The SETI@home v8 v8.08 (alt) windows_x86_64 are 38 seconds and the opencl_ati5_nocal & opencl_ati5_SoG_nocal are 400 - 450 seconds. ?

I'm not using Lunatics atm and I'm only running 1 WU at a time... which is nothing for the Radeon VII. My average GPU load after 12 hours is 81% and temps are around 60 degrees. I did try running 2 x WU's but the run times looked weird.One WU's would take about 18mins while the other went really quickly. As soon as the quick WU finished, the slow one speed up for a bit till the next wu started. In the end, I wasn't sure it was worth it.

I may try the Lunatics mod but I need a base to begin from really.

chooka03

I'm trying Lunatics now. See how it goes. 1 WU @ a time.

chooka03

WOW.... that's dedication Dingo! :thumbsup:
There's no way I could be bothered with all that technical jargon lol

Dingo

Yes it is very long and based on a new installation of Ubuntu 18.04.  I moved the post over to the Linux thread.
