I used to run Debian all the time.  I tried Centos for a while, but I have settled on Ubuntu in the last year or so.  It is easy to download from http://releases.ubuntu.com/18.04/ and I use a program called rufus to put it on a loadable usb stick from my Windows machine.  https://rufus.ie/

The option to login as root is not available with this version as it is downloaded so you need to use sudo before almost all commands.  If you want to login as root you can try sudo -i after you login to access root.

Greetings NudgeyNR

There are a couple of other variants to choose as well, I myself am using Linux Mint 19.2 (which is loosely based on the Ubuntu/Debian family), am not to sure how it goes inside a VM as its been awhile.

Check out Distrowatch.org

With Debian, you get the OS, but then you can choose which Desktop Environment you want to use, and it has a lot to choose from.

Same with Ubuntu and also Mint, its all about trial and error, some are heavy on the Graphics others a lightweight.

No GPU crunching can be done inside the VM, but CPU yes.

Just an update

Have loaded a both Lubuntu 19.04 and Xubuntu 19.4 into a VM each.  Now going to play around over the next couple of days.

Might load up an old quad core with one the above and get BOINC up and running as well, oh, well that might have to wait till after the FB Sprint on LHC this weekend.

Regards

I really like Xubuntu, nice and simple and easy to use. Seems pretty stable, I have it running on a 2011 macbook and an old AMD server without any problems. I think I've had it running in VMs too.

Hi All

I am liking Xubuntu more that Lubuntu, they both have their quirks, but yeah Xubuntu is running real sweet in a VM, I am still getting my way round both of them, as I have been using MINT for the last year or to.

Cheers

I have been trialing Kubuntu on both VM on VBox (Win10) and an old AMD Phenom II 6core.

Don't like the tablet like interface of ubuntu.

Is there a text editor for GUI that allows sudo/admin access to files ??

Slowly getting use to linux, utilizing both cmd line and gui.
