Arthritis

Hi all
Looks like my 80yo dad might have some form of arthritis (like me!),
Not sure if it's osteo or rheumatoid. He saw his GP today and is off for an xray of his knees tomorrow.
I have had rheumatoid arthritis for over 10 years now. I keep it in control with a daily dose of 1000mg of Sulfasalazine.
I'm hoping my dad can get some relief from medication and negate the need for surgery. I do know someone about the same age as my dad and he has had both knees replaced. Ouch! But I think he is doing quite well.

I had my hip replaced because of Arthritis last year at 72 years old  It was almost bone on bone the doctor said after the operation.  All I said was I told you it was sore.

During Physio there were people before us hip replacement lot that had their knees done.  I can tell you they were in a lot more pain after the operation and during physio than any of us.  I vowed never to get my knee joint replaced.

My wife has arthritis in both knees and is bone on bone in her right knee after tearing her medial meniscus a few years back.  She's in the system for a knee replacement at 52.  The whole system is based on the assumption that the patients are in their 70s but the surgeon, who normally tells people to wait until then, says that hers is the worst he's seen based on the MRIs and X-rays.

Well it's been confirmed - my dad has osteoarthritis in both knees.

After his xray, his GP gave him a referral to see a specialist - but no medication in the meantime for his pain. Not sure why that is. Maybe the GP is expecting the specialist to medicate??

I was just told to have Panadol and an anti inflammatory over the counter drug which I can't think the name of.   Nurofen that was it.  I had to stop taking them when they affected my kidneys too much.
