RNA World (beta) is based at the Rechenkraft.net e.V. research facility located in Germany. The goal of the RNA World project is to systematically identify all known RNA family members in all organisms known to date and make the results available to the public in a timely fashion. We also aim at supplying established bioinformatic databases such as Rfam2 with our results.

Every protein in a cell is produced from a transiently synthesized messenger molecule, termed mRNA. Today, it has become clear that probably a major fraction of regulatory events taking place in a human cell might be governed by small RNAs, the so-called miRNAs. Among other functions, these appear responsible for making sure that a skin cell becomes a skin cell while a muscle, liver or hair cell differentiates to a muscle, liver or hair cell during development and all this although the genetic material (DNA) of all of these very different cell types is essentially identical. On top of that it seems that many cancer types are accompanied by or even result from a deregulated miRNA profile in the affected cell. Moreover, viruses have been discovered to bring along miRNAs to modify the target cell's regulatory network leading to diseases.

Hence, we can clearly state that investing into RNA research, e.g. by supporting the RNA World distributed supercomputer project, will ultimately lead to important discoveries that might also have significant impact on future health care.

Applications run on the following platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
  • Microsoft Windows running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU
  • Linux running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
  • Linux running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU

Hummm ... I couldn't a new status topic so here's the project status. Only cncalibrate for linux.  :cry2:

CMC only, for a while...
Well, the current test sets of CMS work units are near completion and we will now have to wait until all CMC WUs are done as well before we can go for the real big hunt. Since currently only Linux x64 systems can be served, this might take a few days, so I would suggest that meanwhile you guys add another project to your BOINC manager if you have not done so already. It is of course possible (and even likely) that I will submit new sets of CMS WUs for other OS inbetween but first I need to take a deep look into all the nice things we have produced already. Please stay tuned, you all have done an excellent job so far. ;-) Michael. 15 Feb 2010 16:40:32 UTC

"HD checkup complete, new CMS WUs ahead
Last night we have run a thorough HD hardware check over several hours to identify the reason for why our RAID system on the server occasionally slows down. However, the HD is error-free. Anyway, new CMS work units for all operating systems will be released some time this weekend in addition to the remainder of the CMC work for Linux x64 machines. It would help us to speed up things (and generate even more CMS work) if the Linux x64 users could transiently disable the cmsearch application and focus on completion of the CMC packets.
