Title: GPUs not being recognised
Post by: jave808 on August 23, 2024, 07:30:43 AM
Well, I'm after some advice as to what to do here.

Last night, for reasons unknown, I decided to update the BIOS on PC1. A straightforward procedure you'd think. But no, not for me!

Board is a MS B550-A PRO. MSI makes updating easy. No more booting into DOS to manually run an update exe.

So I updated the BIOS to the latest version, let the board do it's thing and it rebooted. BUT I did notice that the BIOS splash screen didn't display on my 2nd monitor like it usually did (it's connected via DP while my 1st/main monitor is via HDMI). It's always shown on the 2nd monitor as I guess the video card initialises the DP ports first.

Anyhoo, the PC booted into Linux Mint like it normally does, but no display on the 2nd monitor. I go to check on BOINC through BOINC Manager and notice that the GPU tasks of Amicable Numbers aren't running. All that is shown is a "GPU missing" message.

So I go to check the Display settings. Only my main monitor is recognised, but even then it doesn't display the "Philips" brand name - just "Unrecognised monitor". This is unusual I thought to myself.

So I descided to rollback the BIOS version as that was the only real change I had made. Luckily for me, newer boards allow you to rollback, unlike older boards where once you updated that was it! And unfortunately I still had the same issue.

So, can anyone offer any advice as to where to go next? Why are my GPUs (two RTX3070s) not being recognised by BOINC?

Yes, yes, I should of left the BIOS alone. If it ain't broke don't fix it...

Start by doing a BIOS reset and reboot.  Sometimes the settings get messed up during updates.  Then make sure the new bios doesn't have some weird setting to dis/enable GPUs.

Thanks Dark Angel. This fixed it, as after the update Secure Boot was Enabled. Secure Boot and Linux don't mix. Also, I had a HDMI switcher attached to the 2nd monitor. Bypassing that I got my 2nd display back.

I did the BIOS reset to defaults first, checked Secure Boot and BINGO it was enabled. Disabled that then did the BIOS update and again, had to disable Secure Boot.

All is well now. Phew. :-)
