Title: Windows Subsystem for Linux
Post by: Dave Studdert on July 04, 2025, 04:39:33 PM
Has anybody else tried Windows Subsystem for Linux? Its like a VM but runs straight from the Powershell.

Gday, Dave,

Yeah tried it early last summer, it worked, but I didn't have enough memory in my system to do anything much with it.

I believe some other members on here, have more recent experiences with it.

Regards

I've used it for work for setting up a Ubuntu VM and some docker containers. It's cool but it depends what you want to do with it. I'm unsure how it will go for BOINC as they prefer the Science United container

I only use to run linux scripts only.  I have stopped even doing that lately.  I tried to run BOINC on there but it did not like it and my system did not have enough memory.  BUT hey give it a go nothing ventured nothing gained.

I had a play with it, installed it on my Ryzen 7900X with 64GB ram, seems to go ok, Gaia is running quite well on it. I was even able to run Satisfactory game at stable 60fps on windows while Gaia ran on Linux with 18 cores.

I can only get terminal stuff running, couldnt get a desktop GUI to work on it like Cinnamon or Gnome yet, kept giving me errors or crashing, clearly i'm doing something wrong.
Will play a bit more with setting up the desktop GUI when I have some more time to waste.

I tried with 64 but I would say minimum is probably 32.
