Title: BOINC Manager Browser
Post by: Mike Mitchell on April 23, 2009, 05:55:59 PM
Does anyone know how to make the BOINC Manager open Firefox in Kubuntu 9.04? Firefox is the default browser but Konqueror is still opened, which I would prefer didn't open. :furious:

That sucks and blows! If I get the energy or annoyed enough, I'll pop over to the BOINC forum and lodge a complaint.

From memory and mines terrible its a Linux issue. You need to somehow determine your default program and that method varies by display manger/distro.  One of those too many flavors issues. But my memory is shot lol.

I don't currently have a working computer with Kubuntu but perhaps try this:

Menu -> Tools -> System Tools -> Control Centre

And then in there select:

KDE Components -> Component Chooser -> Web Browser

And then for "Open http and https URLs" select:

"in the following browser"

Either click on the "..." to select Firefox from the menus, or type in the name of the browser (e.g. mozilla, firefox, opera, etc.) in the textbox.

If you have a file called /etc/profile you can add this and BOINC should open firefox. Make a copy od the original just in case it does not work

Add the following in the file

#Set Browser to Firefox
BROWSER="/usr/bin/firefox"   # CHANGE THIS TO THE LOCATION WHERE FIRFOX IS ON YOUR SYSTEM
export BROWSER

Thanks Dingo, I was really hoping that would work. The idea seemed sound but, alas, no change even after rebooting the machine. Plus one for the idea.

edit: Ignore the first part, I had a typo in the script. All is well and working now. Thanks for that Dingo, it is a big help.  :thanks1:
