Title: Apt upgrade message to get Ubuntu Pro
Post by: Dingo on March 27, 2026, 05:36:48 PM
This is mainly for my future use when I get more servers etc

When you update/upgrade in Ubuntu 24 and most modern others versions of Ubuntu it says that you can get extra updates like this one when I updated my system today.

Get more security updates through Ubuntu Pro with 'esm-apps' enabled:
  vlc-plugin-qt libvlc5 libimage-magick-perl libmagickcore-6.q16-7t64
  libzvbi-common vlc-data libvlccore9 vlc imagemagick vlc-bin libcjson1
  libavdevice60 ffmpeg libpostproc57 libqt5gui5t64 libmbedcrypto7t64
  libavcodec60 libzvbi0t64 libimage-magick-q16-perl libavutil58
  libqt5widgets5t64 imagemagick-6.q16 libswscale7 libqt5dbus5t64
  vlc-plugin-access-extra libqt5network5t64 libswresample4
  imagemagick-6-common vlc-plugin-video-output 7zip libavformat60 libvlc-bin

The following packages will be upgraded:
  alsa-ucm-conf bind9-dnsutils bind9-host bind9-libs google-chrome-stable gvfs

  systemd-sysv systemd-timesyncd udev virtualbox virtualbox-dkms

The updates first lot of upgrades in italics are only available if you pay for Ubuntu Pro which unless you have many machines is not worth it.  I do not want to pay for Ubuntu Pro so I found that you can get rid of that message by running.

sudo mkdir /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/off
sudo mv /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/20apt-esm-hook.conf /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/off
