Title: Windows 7 (beta)
Post by: Brods on February 03, 2009, 03:32:07 AM
Hi all,

Just letting you know I have installed Windows 7 (replacing a Ubuntu box until the test period runs out) - and I like it.
Yes I expect flames for that - but hey it might not be a FREE OS, but it was free - and I think worth a look.

I have it running on my slowest box (Celeron 2.8Ghz, with a 6200 Nvidia card) - and it handles the Aero interface sufficiently (very surprised!) and it looks good. It feels relatively responsive considering the hardware. I find the interface extremely nice to use.

Funnily enough (I am not a Network master) it did not network as easily as I expected (though I am sure it would work fine with other Windows 7 boxes). I have Linux and Windows XP able to read and write to it's public folders, but can't get it to read from the XP or Linux boxes. Don't worry about suggestions - I'm not worried about it (it's probably also safer that way), it is just a test box.

I have not benchmarked it's BOINC performance against the Ubuntu on the same hardware, but it feels responsive (and yes - BOINC was the first app I installed).

Did anyone one else get Windows 7.
Feel free to discuss tips/tricks here - or ask me to try anything out if you are curious and don't have the option of trying it out yourself. (I may not be quick to respond, but I will get around to it sooner or later).

P.S. It sounds like Microsoft is seriously ramping up for a quick release (1 and only 1 RC due mid year) - this is basically going to be the Vista that Vista should have been from what I have seen.

I'm a sucker for beta testing  biggrin

Will download it as well, and give it a whirl..

Been running it for nearly a month now.  It's a massive improvement on Vista.

Superfetch actually seems to do something usefull now, rather than just flog the f*** out of the HDD.

Readyboost can be run on more than 1 usb stick.  I've only tried 2.  <=goto device manager and select the better performance profile.

I really like being able to pin most used programs to the taskbar.

From memory I've only had about 3 programs not work.

I will defiantly upgrade.

I gave it a quick run on my play laptop and it was nice.  Faster than Vista, I felt, and maintained the clean interface.  I didn't do much feature experimentation.  I didn't try networking other than the internet (which was fine).  Just downloaded Server 2008 R2 beta to give that a try too.

I haven't benchmarked any BOINC projects on Win 7 either, and I'm about to overwrite it so don't expect any  ;D

Yes they have committed to push that release cycle faster from now on.  I understand the reasons but I'm not that keen on the idea.

PS. why is there an All Things Linux area, but a Windows topic has to be in Open Discussion?  /me stirs the pot  ::)

Let's keep it that way - it might stop people talking about DOS too  :P

The more things change, the more they stay the same:

Five Versions (http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/136277,microsoft-reveals-five-windows-7-versions.aspx)

At least they are coming down *grin*

The online upgrade option looks pretty handy too - if the price works out ok.

installed win7 a few weeks ago on my lappie at home. have to say its the best thing ms have come up with in the last decade :)

i stayed clear from vista like the plague, the shiney glitter wow-ed me for about half an hour when it first came out, but its a p.o.s.

win 7 is hands down the winner, very responsive, revamped in every way and actually feels lighter (runs faster) then the previous XP nlite install i had on there.

cant wait for the RC to come out :)

Are they doing an RC?  I thought I heard they would skip it this time, since they were reusing enough of Vista to be confident without it.  I could easily be wrong though.

Im pretty certain they will bring the RC out before the official release.
MS have been very inconsistent with everything win7, with the official release now being quite possibly in jun-july this year....

Oh well, we'll have to wait and see :)

I was wrong about RC1.  According to my local Microsoft source, RC1 will come out around June, and final release is slated for November this year.

what i would be interested in knowing is how it compares to:
windows xp (32 bit)
windows ap (64 bit)
ubunto (64 bit)

and yes...i know that i may be asking a lot for those that test these things at the OS level but at this stage I can' t see why one wouldn't go to w7 64 bit from XP

I may be naive or it's to much champagne, but I still think its worth the ask

ps.  i think we need a drinking icon...........
