Well not a good start to the day.
First off when i went to start up my quad this morning i could log in o.k. but then i got a warning
that i had run out of disk space, there is over 60gig free space. It stopped and wouldn't boot so i hit the reset
button. Then it started disk check and that failed and i had to run it manually that's o.k. did that. Fixed all errors
So tried to restart got this message.
could not start X server
(your graphical environment)
due to some internal error
please contact your system
administrator or check your
syslog to dignose.
In the meantime this display
will be disabled.
Please restart GDM when
the problem is corrected.
(there is a red O.K. button below which dose nothing.)
And this underneath(unbutu 8.04.2 with computer name plus) tty1(no the end)
It has came up with a log in for user name & password that dosen't work either!
What can i do, do i have to try reinstall or can i fix this from the install disk?
HELP.
pete.
Oh the joys of computing P.P.L. These things happen just to make our day.
You can try to repair your system from your installation CD using the various options available (There is a choice of repairing X).
As it seems from your message you can not even log in you might have to Re-Install unless other more experienced members can come up with a solution..I found that sometimes the repair works and sometimes it does not. A re-install on the other hand does not take long and you are assured of a fresh start.
Yes the joy indeed, i don't know what happened but while it was down i took her outside
to clean the filters etc, fiddled with the sata cables and what do you know! the dam thing started up
no problems? so i have backed up everything that i need to one of the other rigs, just in case.
pete. as well!
Sounds like it might have just been a loose cable.

Watch what you are saying WS, I might report you to the Forum Moderator. :jester:
I had a look in the debug log found this.
swsusp: Resume from partition 8:5.
PM: checking swsusp image.
PM: Resume from disk failed.
That's all i could find that looks odd.

G'day Pete,
Some things that you may want to "keep an eye" on are disc space in /tmp, /boot and if you have them as separate partitions, /var, /usr etc (that's etcetera not /etc unless it, too. is on a separate partition :wink).
/boot can fill up without warning if you have the machine doing auto-updates. Sorry, I have forgotten the proper way to trim the number of boot images.
