My quad with 9600GT has had a lot of GPU Wu's error out lately, so I think its time to try upgrading the driver again (every other time has caused massive errors).
Problem is, when I try to install the new driver from command prompt my usual way it says that there i salready an Nvidia driver, kernel something or other.. etc .
So I need to uninstall the exisitng driver from what I can gather.
The way I would have done it was to go to Synaptic and uninstall everything with nvidia in the name, whch (I think) has worked before (when I had all sorts o f nvidia things (glx etc) installed) but this time there is nothng "highlighted" in synaptic, for me to "uninstall".
looked around in Ubuntu forums abot but could only find things like "sudo apt-get remove nvidia-glx" and sinmilar, which dont help as it isnt installed so there nothing to remove !.
Anyone else know how to uninstall the nvidia driver ? please ??
EDIT: I found how to remove it... now just installing latest driver.. hope it fixes the probs.
What command do you use to install a nvidia driver when it isn't yet in Synaptic?
to INSTALL ??
to install, I do it from a command prompt (Ctrl+Alt+F1), then cd to the directory whiere the downloaded driver is and "sudo NVIDIA-Linux-xxxxxxxxxx". (but kill gdm first.. then restart after installing new driver)
if you mean what command did i find to UNinstall the driver (when I couldn't find anything ticked, under "nvidia", in synaptic; i used:
sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx* nvidia-kernel-common nvidia-settings
sudo rm /etc/init.d/nvidia-*
sudo update-rc.d nvidia-kernel remove
there was another command attached to this group which I didn't use coz it was to get-install restricted drivers. I dont know if the first command particularly DID anything in my case, as I didn't have nvidia-glx installed.
Thanks veebee
No, I did mean install. All I get is a 'command not found ' message.
Do you need to unpack them first?
no mate, didn't unpack anything...
just downloaded from nVidia's site, after selecting which card's driver i wanted.

What command did you use?
sudo sh NVIDIA-linux xxxxx
How do I stop the x-server from running?
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
cd to the folder with the driver
install it
then sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
forgot to mention.... stop Boinc before you exit to xcommand prompt, then restart afetr you come back... that way it will use the new driver
EDIT: hang on... oh..um... actually , first you gotta log out of "Rocoll" and login in as "veebee" on all your hosts, then start up Aqua on all of them....

Sheeeeeshhhhhhhhhhh never give a "retired" fireman a half chance!
I use killgdm instead of gdm stop. Makes sure NO processes are running.

..... a "retired" fireman......
I told the bird I'm not retired yet ...
but the paperwork IS in the pipelines.... and neurosurgeon and Family GP agree that they should give me wads and wads of cash... tax free... and a few ingots of gold... maybe a handful of rubies and emeralds too...
(but seriously... I think I'll be retired by years end.. maybe earlier..)

Couple of weeks ago I was sent into the new Employment system, and had to have the last of the PSP interviews to see if I was ready to rejoin the workforce and become a regular bloke again.
Well I was classified as 8-14, which meant I had the option of ditching work period and going onto the Disability Pension. (Can you think of a job which DOESN'T have stress in it nowadays?) Soooooo am getting Neurologist to fill in the forms and see what happens. As it is, am not expected to look for work, although still send off the odd application with same epilepsy qualification to what seem like stress-less jobs *grin*
WEG Swap ya *grin*
