Title: Sydney dust storm
Post by: BF on September 23, 2009, 11:53:55 AM
Anyone else in Sydney who feels they were unwittingly transported to Mars last night?

The dust is everywhere in the house..  I'm wondering whether I should shut off all the computers and cover them with a sheet.  Thick layers of red-brown dust are coating every surface.  And my car outside looks like it's been in an outback rally..

See the attached pic of one of my computers..  It's a 25cm side fan, and I cleaned it yesterday!!  Had the house shut all day, no windows open, and it still looks like this!  :furious:

Wow that's pretty disturbing.

I haven't seen anything like that since one of the Mel Gibson movies a while back that I believe was shot in Australia.

I hope everyone comes through it alright.

There was a huge one in Melbourne in the 80's I remember,  I was on the 21 st floor of a building on St Kilda road and we could see it comming from miles away.  The sydney one looks very thick though.

Yes - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne_dust_storm

I remember that too although I wasn't in Melbourne.  The Sydney conditions were similar with a hot day followed by strong colder winds bringing the dust - unfortunately our dust arrived at night and we didn't get to see it coming, but we did get an interesting sunrise.

By the end of the day yesterday the air was almost completely clear again but there is a layer of dust on almost everything, and a lot of extra work for the car wash businesses :)

We got the storm up here in the North East corner of NSW. Our dust was more grey than red though. Visibility dropped to about 500 meters around lunch time. I'm on the top of a hill & I couldn't see any of the neighboring hills.
