Title: SGI 02 computer
Post by: Latoof on October 16, 2009, 11:12:04 AM
I have acquired a Silicon Graphics 02 computer.

It boots up and loads to a screen where I can select users but passwords are required.

System running IRIX 6.5 I believe.

I was thinking of loading Ubuntu or similar on it and using it to run BOINC exclusively but I cant figure out how to make it boot from the CDrom...

alternately I will list it in the h/w section for sale... biggrin

They are nice to look at, but these days, you can pick up a $10 toaster with more CPU power  :jester:

I haven't heard of anyone getting Ubuntu onto an o2 but I'm sure it would be possible with a bit of work.  I know there is a Debian port and some BSD variants that support it.

To be honest, this is not worth your time if you are only using it for BOINC.  It's 15 year old technology, your power bill will not be pleasant, and it will get you about 50 credits a day.  The graphics ASIC isn't supported by any of the GPU apps.  The hard disk must be on borrowed time too!

In other words, sell it to a collector (there are a few out there on eBay) and build/buy a yum cha white box PC instead   biggrin
