Title: What version of Linux.....
Post by: Furlozza on November 18, 2009, 03:31:12 AM
Am sitting here awaiting the arrival of just a couple of things to make the second and LAST puter (unless some numbers fall my way, big time LOL) and since it is going to be running Linux 64 bit, I was wondering if there are many and varied ideas of which one I should use, bearing in mind that am still a Linux babe in the woods.

iGnatious is running Ubuntu 9.4, and the easy thing would be to download and install from .......... wait a minute...... could I download and copy it to a USB drive and then install from there, rather than worry about removing and installing a CD/DVD player burner? Anyways, as I was saying, using Ubuntu, but have any other variations brought forth something that Canonical (?) have missed?

I've only ever tried 64bit Ubuntu but I'm happy with it. 9.04 is stable but 9.10 is out now too.

For USB install, the motherboard needs to support USB boot (most now do). Then you need to create the USB bootable image. An easy way is to boot from CD/DVD on another computer, insert USB, and choose the "USB Startup Disk creator" option from the System menu. The USB drive will be an available install target to select.  It was pretty easy, from memory.

Do you mean USB flash drive, or USB hard disk?  This install method has to create boot partitions on the device so beware losing data on USB!

WW

Was thinking along the lines of taking the version of Ubuntu that is still on TheGnat's HD as an ISO file and transferring that to a USB stick and then installing from the USB stick to the new puter..... (when certain parts arrive and I have enough scotch *grin*)

I might be wrong, but I dont think you can copy the "installation" that is on the Gnat, and then "install" it on a new one... it isn't an "install file".

You CAN pull the HDD out of the gnat and plonk it in another machine though, so maybe a "copy" of Gnats HDD onto a fresh HDD and use that..

but why not just let the latest ISO download ? overnight, if its a "time" problem..?

or ask someone to post you a copy of the install disc... it'll only take a day or two to get to you ..

You can make an image of the PC and put it on the other PC.  Never tried it but when I had the diskless PC's setup it used Clonezilla.  It is free and supposed to be easy to use ???
