All day today I have been moving the web server from an old AMD single core PC over to one of my Q6600 quad cores. I have installed all the software 64 bit Linux, and there are a few problems but I should be able to transfer to the new server soon.
The computer had a ATI HD4770 graphics card. I have installed BOINC and it is running but it does not recognise the GPU, 4770. As I am not very proficient with Linux I have no Idea how to install drivers or in fact where to find them. I have done the search of the web and downloaded a file called ati-driver-installer-10-5-x86_64.run but I have no idea how to run a file with a run extension ??
The PDF that came with it said that I needed some programs to be installed but I looked at the first one which is XFree86 which looks very complicated to load.
Anyone have a HD 4770 on their linux PC and can tell me if they went through this to get the card running ???
I loaded all the software and when I eventually ran the drivers load it ran but BOINC still does not see the cards. I looked in system-config-display and under video card it has Radeon HD 4770 (RV740) but in the configure box the drivers are not there for the 4770. It is running under the vesa Generic driver. If I select the radeon - ATI Radeon card. X server fails to start and I have to re configure back to the Generic.
Any help gratefully received ???
PS: I have been loading this PC since 1 PM yesterday and it is now 1:51 AM so I have been going about 10 hours if you take away meal breaks. Linux is cheap but you need a lot of time to do anything and another PC along side the one your working on so you can search for help.
Nite all Bashhead :compbash:
You didn't say which flavour of the Linux OS you are using.
I would guess Ubuntu Server Edition.
I am using CENTOS 5.5 and the newest build of 2.6.18.194.26.1.el5 with Gnome as a GUI, but I suspect that the process will be the same for most of the popular linux systems. I am using CENTOS because I know that it works with the web cam scripts etc. Always have the ability to get to the command line to do the work for the drivers install.
Now that I am a bit more awake I see in the install log that it could not find X.Org. So I will have a look at that today.
Still trying to get the 4770 drivers installed. Linux is very hard to install drivers when you don't know what you are doing.
I have a thread running in the CENTOS forum (https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=29090&start=0#forumpost120858) on the problem.
After I eventually got the installer to run and it seemed to do all the right things it didn't install. :boom:
All my Spinhenge tasks on that PC all had an error and exited, about 96 tasks, as it could not find a libatiuki.so.1 file.
I am running Yoyo on that PC now till I can have a look tomorrow.
It ended up being a problem with fglrx and the Centos 5.5 kernel. Elrepo created a ATI drivers load for CENTOS 5.5 from the standard version 10.11. I did the testing and today I got the driver working and DNET is crunching using my ATI HD 4770 on device http://dnetc.net/results.php?hostid=13378
The driver is not available as yet from elrepo but should be on there list soon.
I am crunching spinhenge and DNETC on the PC now.
