Title: Cels@Home 2 is still getting started
Post by: WikiWill on January 30, 2009, 04:22:12 PM
Just a note to anyone from B@A who stumbles on this project in the next few weeks...  The new server (http://celsathome.bme.utexas.edu/cels/) is still being set up and there are database issues preventing you joining the Cels B@A team.  There's a note in this message board thread (http://celsathome.bme.utexas.edu/cels/forum_thread.php?id=9) that indicates they are working on it.

So meanwhile, create your account and get crunching, and I will post a note here (and PM you if you request it) when the database opens for team joining.

Some vital stats etc:

Hey all, still no update from the project admins about when the database / team issues will be fixed.

However BOINC@AUSTRALIA is now ranked 1st by RAC and 3rd by total credit!

I just learned that the research project behind this may have lost funding, which may explain the lack of admin activity. For now I recommend spending your time on other projects!

The server has been down for 3 weeks now.  My last two emails to the guy in charge of this project have received no response.

I think it's time to move this to the Inactive Projects section!!

Well, CELS is back online

Still cant join the team though, but at least its up and running again.

I really hope this project gets off the ground, properly - I liked what I saw the first time around!

Yay, they found someone to reboot the server  :jester:

I'm not putting much into this one until something positive happens on the project admin side.  I did offer but heard nothing back, and probably a good thing too since I've found some more immediate needs for my time!

Let's hope it gets sorted and we can keep  :oz: at number 1 for a while :)

joined up as well.

I liked the original project too, lets hope thisone kicks off well and lets us get off to a flying start... but we gotta get this "team" issue sorted, or all crunching UNTIL it is sorted is sort of "wasted"..

I wouldnt go nuts with this one veebs, its very unreliable at the moment, and I will not be crunching it again untill the B@A team issue is fixed and we can all join WikiWill in racking up the points for the team

there's no work available ATM anyways ... and its Win only ....luckily (some might say..) my i7 is running Win XP.

Am STILL waiting on a copy of Vista x64 which was supposed to be sent over a month ago.... Im hoping that THAT will speed things up a bit.

Vista ewwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!  That said im running vista 64bit on my i7.... for games but its lousy for games too.  More crashes per day than ME.

may well stick with XP then...I was just hoping that running a 64 bit OS would increase the output (boinc wise).

This is also my gaming computer, so it "sort of" has to be windows.... (it is dual boot... I just havent used the Ubuntu install much..if at all.)

Sorry, I'm terribly confused.  ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? My laptop runs Vista and it needs about 1GB of RAM to run just the minimum amount of services, with everything running it is 1.36GB right now. While that doesn't seem like much of an increase, it's really 368.64MB more to run 12 tabs in Firefox, BOINC, Thunderbird, Yahoo Messenger, Taskmanager, and a few other bits and pieces. No, there's nothing to it. Vista is just too damn memory hungry. 1024MB for the OS?! That sucks.

Putting on my security hat for a minute - make sure you do boot Ubuntu periodically and install the updates.  For example, boot it once a month, start the download/install (from the red icon in top right corner if it's a default window config) then go out for a coffee.

If the time comes when you want to use it, it's more likely to be protected from malware and other issues, and you won't be slugged with a big download of patches in one go.

<security hat off>

that's OK, there's 6Gb of  DDR3-1333 in there - I made sure I went 6 Gb MIN.  The only reason I "want" windows on the box is coz it's the"gaming box". (I play a bit of Crysis,  F.E.A.R. and V8 Supercars on it)

Yes WW, I do that "regularly".. I just meant I haven't crunched with it (maybe a cpl WU's ??) or "used" it for anything else...

Of course the same advice applies to Windows.  Probably even more so.

That's a worthwhile reason then.  biggrin I only keep mine for uFluids and minefield, which is particularly good on Vista.

But uhmmm, does Windows see the whole 6GB?  Windows XP 32 bit wouldn't...  And if you have a graphics card with a lot of memory (like 1GB or more), it gets even worse.

<offtopic>
32-bit Windows cannot see or use more than 3.5GB of RAM, but any 64-bit Windows will recognise and use 6GB no worries. My Windows XP 64-bit accurately reports 6GB RAM. I understand this is why veebee wants to go to 64-bit Vista.

Yep..Wang hit the nail on the head...Im "supposed" to be getting a Vista 64 bit disc, which I am after for a cpl reasons.....

I want the "Windows" side of things for gaming ability....

and I might also put it on the home theatre setup I'm building.... purely to utilise the software that came with the TV card etc that I got... the mate who has all these spare pc bits, has a HUUUGE screen and projector, for TV, DVD's

etc, and has an amazing program for controlling it all... I will have togo look what it is.. and see if the disc is laying around there somewhere...

I shall continue to keep us well off topic lol.  At this moment in Vista i am using 3.2Gb of RAM!!!!
A whole 4 FF Tabs, One Usb device mid copy (3.5Gb of files from USB to USB) and obviously BOINC (2X GPUGrid (gEV,Je) and 8 ABC WU's).  That's the least RAM i have seen it use in ages.  When i game i suddenly think its time for 12Gb RAM.  But if i want to game its not like i have a choice in the matter.
Whats even worse is the Vista decides my game has crashed due to a graphics driver crash randomly.  Saddest thing is i can see the game happily playing in behind the your dead box.  There's no problem at all beyond Vista being a pain and worse still no matter what i do it closes the game once i click the Close program or the X to close the box!!!  If only it would let me save the game first :cry2:

So as you can tell im a massive Vista Fanboi lol

Oh lastly can anyone tell me what if anything Readyboost does?  I have a 4Gb USB stick for Readyboost and im yet to notice any difference with it plugged in or not plugged in.

Apparently it's used as hard-drive cache

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReadyBoost

Explains why its not doing anything for me i still have RAM to use before i start caching.

Unreliable is probably the understatement of the year :D

Yes the server is down again and has been for a few days, so it's not looking hopeful!
