Linux performance - POGS

Old hands at Linux must be laughing at all this .... anyways. All is good with the universe today after the Fed25 updates were done - now across 3 test boxes and all showed the same initial poor results, then once updated the Fed25 results were lineball with Manjaro. It is a nicer interface IMHO and one that I will use from now on. It is interesting in a nerd way that the performance of an install is still very dependent on underlying cpu firmware (microcode) ... 2017 and all that. It worked, just nowhere near the full potential until the update.

I applaud your enthusiasm with Linux.   :congrats  :worship  :congrats

I have been crunching with Debian and Centos versions only and only on the command line.  The only time I had to use a GUI was when I transferred my web page to another Debian dedicated server and I needed a GUI so I could convince youtube I was me sending the videos each night.

I do not know much about linux and what I learn I usually forget the next time the problem comes up.  Thank goodness there is Google and most problems have been worked out by someone else.

Enjoy reading your posts so keep it up, many on the board are lookers and read posts but do not post many themselves.  It takes all types and there is nothing wrong with that.

.. enthusiasm ...

Thx Dingo. I did the same with windoze when I thought it was the only smart choice to make. Seeing the lightweight GUI's in Linux like Xfce there is very minimal CPU overhead and nothing running under the bonnet you don't approve of. Windoze is bloatware now - I am astonished at the productivity you get out of Linux. Datamining and raw computing is a true wow factor and having a GUI on Linux is (nothing) like drinking skim milk.

Sh*t happens so much faster on Linux. I did a thorough windows attack surface analysis back in the heady days of windows 7 that looked at opportunities for all_the_wares to cripple a system - from firmware to boot/bios to kernel and user etc. Nothing has changed. Linux operates on the exact same hardware and has the exact same problems - with the advent of UEFI and dynamic coding/updates every piece of interconnected copper and silicon is fair game. Will dig up the document and post it - once done with porting my life over to Linux will do one up for it.

IMO minimalism for the masses will be a thing again. Stick a fork in windoze - it will change to keep up now that moores law has reached the end of it's run. Putting something lightweight into a cheap box is the new black. I can hear eyes rolling for all those who did this 5 years ago. It is fun playing with Linux when you have a purpose.

Greetings FindersKeepers

Been a bit of fresh air through the place lol, with all your Linux testing, which has been really interesting to read.

I do fall into the looker catergory most of the time, unless I have 5 mins to have a peek and send a quick reply, mostly when people are logging their milestones.

Been a bit of a MINT fan, but as I dont get the time anymore (2 kids - Still at the age where they want to hang out with their father lol) I havent just had the time to experiment.

When I do get a chance to rebuild a machine I will definitely give it a run, maybe throw in the new kernel thats been released and see what destruction I can do to a poor computer lol.

Happy Crunching

Cheers tazz, Linux is more than a one night stand. The reality is every release should be considered half baked - sadly just like windows multiplied 290 times. There are faults with every flavour of Linux and no 2 are the same. Pretty much art imitating life. Ceste la vie.
