Power cost

Due to rising retail power cost my electricity per KWH went up 38% in July, I fear most people had similar rises. I am going to cross over to Amber energy and just pay fluctuation wholesale energy cost that should be lower. I am hoping to just schedule my crunching to when electricity cost are at there lowest price. I was wondering if anyone else has done something similar or if there is away to get live energy cost and develop some script or alert to crunch at specific times.

Sadly I've just reduced my crunching. Power bill is killing me.

I too have decided to crunch during the day only. I will kill off all my PCs overnight.

Current bill is $485, which is a bit for two people (Mum and myself). Also had air conditioning running for a fair bit during the day. Will cut back on that over the coming (hopefully cooler) months!

My electricity is going up again about $0.05 a kw/h and minus $0.01 for solar.  Daily service charge has gone up 11 cents a day.

PS:  I don't think I have mentioned this but in October I am going to Canada for six months.  The electricity price in New Brunswick Canada is a flat $0.11 a kw/h.

Bloody electricity!! Makes me so angry that it's become a money making machine for companies instead of a basic, human necessity for people at an affordable price.  :compbash:

My gas has just gone up but we only have 2 choices in QLD so I'm going to ditch AGL & switch to Origin (until they follow suit and jack their prices up.

I hope you enjoy your time in Canada Dingo.  :can

Enjoy Canada Dingo!!!

I'm with Red Energy. Every fortnight I pay about $50 into my electricity account. It adds up and there's less shock at bill time!!!

cruncher Pete

Sorry guys but I can not pay for the Electricity and the Aircons running all day and half the night.  We have a heatwave condition in Brisbane with the forecast of 35C tomorrow and high 30's for the rest of the week.

I am turning off all machines bar two in my bedroom and  it will remain off for some time.  Have fun guys if you can afford the power.

chooka03

Wow  :shock
The other day I tested GFN-20 combined with and without my cpu crunching.
I was using $30.00/ day in electricity!!  :faint:
67.16kWh and 0.00 solar exported.

Dark Angel

Got formal notice my power rates are going up on 1st July.
Was winding my rigs back to just my desktop but wanted to finish off the Denis work I had in cache.
So much for that.
Daughter's machine shat itself.  Replaced the CMOS battery because it was constantly losing time and now refuses to boot at all, so I've stripped my headless machine to get her going again.  Unfortunately that's where the Denis work was running.
If I can get the rig to boot again I'll finish it, but otherwise it's lost.

Dark Angel

Ok, back underway again.  Really didn't want to lose those Denis units.  Will still be shutting it down once they're done though.
Daughter's PC had a corrupted BIOS.  Managed to get it updated and working again.

tazzduke

Excellent work on getting the PC back up and running.

Bugger about the Denis work units.

I got both machines up and running again so I'll be able to get them done before I shut that rig down.  Not happy about it but without a big phat solar array on the roof it's just getting to expensive.

It is mate.
Whilst I'm not giving up on BOINC, it's become a VERY expensive hobby with the prices of electricity & gpu's.
I hate having all these great cpu cores just doing nothing right now and that's purely because of electricity prices.
I really hope something is done regarding power prices in Australia. Surely business will go to the wall soon and maybe that's what it will take to doing something. Involencies.

If it were just my gas prices going up (yep, them as well) I'd crank up more CPUs for the heat, but it's everything all at once.  F'n BS is what it is.  Power and gas are natural monopolies and should be handled by the state.  We have a 50MW hydro plant near here that almost never runs because the private mob that owns it decide is not "cost effective" and would rather run gas turbines instead.  That little hydro could be running 24/7/365, the dam has to release a minimum amount of water for irrigation and use by various towns down stream so they can't argue there isn't enough water release to spin it.
