Rob, it should just work on a clean or a mint4win type install, just select the "use proprietary drivers" option when it pops up after the installation is complete.  Then just restart the machine for the driver to load.  Apart from that I had to download no other drivers to get CUDA working.. I downloaded BOINC 6.4.5, and it recognized both my 9800GT and my 8800GTS on different computers, without going to the CUDA website to download more drivers.
I'm convinced now that Linux in general just likes messing with my head.
I had done the proprietary drivers thing, but on reading your post realized that was before I downgraded to Boinc 6.4.5, so decided to remove & reinstall. On reboot still no cuda devices plus I had lost my screen resolution settings. The best I can get now is 1152x864 where as I normally run 1280x1024. Rebooted a couple more times with no change, then decided to do a complete shutdown. Left it for 5 minutes then restarted & now it recognises my graphics card, for now at least, but my screen resolutions are still stuffed up :-(

On Ubuntu anything later than BOINC 6.4.5 does not work well with CUDA. Use BOINC 6.4.5 and the 180.x series drivers for best results. Also make sure you completely uninstall any previous driver before installing the new one.

I'm using BOINC 6.6.31 and it all works very well in Linux. 6.6.29 and 6.6.36 are useless.
I'm also using the new 190.x drivers without any issues.

I was using Boinc 6.6.29 with Kubuntu with a 18x.x driver(can't remember the exact number). When I went to Mint I started with Boinc 6.6.29 with the standard drivers that are installed when you click on Hardware drivers (180.x). Went back to 6.4.5 & reinstalled the drivers. I'd like to have my correct screen resolutions & have the correct time to completion for GPU work but I'm too scared to start fiddling again now that I have it working.

Well I got lucky. Installed Mint 64 without any problems. I now have windows 7 '64' as one boot with Mint 7 '64' as the other.
Very similar to Ubuntu although a cleaner more modern look. Less geeky and more intuitive.
