Title: "Missing CUDA device".
Post by: veebee on March 30, 2009, 10:24:39 PM
I updated (via GetDeb) to 6.4.5 on one of my machines, which was running GPU grid on a GT 9500. (yes... painflly slow - I know..).

thing is , since the upgrade, I now get an error message.."Error: Missing CUDA device".

I have googled around and it seems (for Vista at least) that the problem is due to Boinc being installed as a service.....

anyone else run into this problem ?
or do I have to go back to the Synaptic repositry version of 6.2.x or something lowly...

I have not seen this problem, but have a few suggestions:

1) Try reinstalling/reloading the NVidia driver. I have found a few times that this is necessary after making system changes.

2) Make sure you have build-essential installed

3) Try a reboot or at least a full BOINC restart

You generally need at least BOINC 6.4.5 for CUDA to be properly recognised. Are you sure you updated all files?

It's tricky...   Took a while for mine to "take" as well.

I can't remember exactly what fixed it but...   run the nvidia programs again, then restart BOINC and see what happens.

P.S. mine is running fine with BOINC 6.4.5.  I ran it with a later version for a while (6.6.something) but the scheduler was all out of whack - it would not ask any project for work.

yeah, this was a fresh re-install of Ubuntu 8.1 a wek or so ago, and it took a couple of days before it just started "doing" GPU grid "by itself".

I have spent so much time fiddling with Nvidia drivers/ Envy/ Coolbits etc that now that I FINALLY have 1680 x 1050 resolution....I'm scared to "fiddle" anymore... lol.

Will see what I can come up with, tho I suppose its not really "worth" running GPUgrid on it anyways...

What about FAH ? does that run undr Ubuntu?

EDIT: Thanks Wang, shut down boinc client and re-started it .... GPU grid crunching (oh well.... chewing... without teeth in ... ) away.

I find that I have to delete and re-install boinc every time I restart the computer to get it to work

yeah i found that with older versions of boinc client on every reboot i had to repair the install for boinc to work.
this has been since fixed with latest versions.

you can just do a repair daveandton, dont have to uninstall and reinstall fully

Thanks for that but I've got 6.4.5 Boinc and for my nvidia 9600gt card I've got version 180.11 driver for kubuntu, but I still get the problem every time I re-start.

I have been using the 6.6.11 version on a cpl of boxes without a prob (now up to 6.6.20 - may have to upgrade those boxes again).

Dave, try upgrading to the 182 drivers. These have fixed quite a few of the earlier issues.

Unless I'm missing something I can only find that driver for Windoze and I use Kubuntu 8.10

Sorry yes, latest driver for linux is 180.44 but it has the same fixes as in the Windows 182.

OK. I've decided to try one more time to get this working on my Kubuntu box. Was hoping upgrading to 9.04 might miraculously fix it, but no such luck.
Which NVIDIA packages do I need from the repositories & which ones are possibly hindering things. When I search for NVIDIA in Synaptic, these are the packages it says I have installed :
envyng-core
envyng-qt
nvidia-settings
nvidia-180-kernel-source
nvidia-kernel-common
nvidia-common
nvclock-qt
nvclock-gtk
nvidia-71-modaliases
nvidia-173-modaliases
nvidia-180-modialiases
nvidia-96-modialiases
nvidia-glx-180
xserver-xorg-video-nv
smartdimmer
jockey-kde
jockey-common

I assume it's safe to remove all the  modaliases packages except the 180 one? I've tried re-installing all the 180 related packages & the kernal common, & common, but Boinc still says no Cuda devices found :cry2:

Did you reboot after installing the drivers?
Title: Re: "Missing CUDA device".

Rob, what driver is recommended when you run "Hardware Drivers", nVidia-settings or some such?  My 9800GT is running just fine and dandy with the recommended driver, in this case 177.82

QuoteDid you reboot after installing the drivers?

Yep

QuoteRob, what driver is recommended when you run "Hardware Drivers", nVidia-settings or some such?

The only place I've seen anything about recommended drivers was in Envy? Under Kubuntu 8.10 it recommended 177.82, which didn't work so I upgraded to 180.something. With 9.04 it recommends 180.44, which is what I'm running.

Just something odd i stumbled upon while getting my server and its GTX280 going.  When BOINC starts it wont find my GTX 280 because it starts before login.  I have to restart BOINC after login (the init.d thing) for it to find the GTX 280 again.  Its really really anoying as it throws away any tasks it has cached and needs to redownload them and start again.   Anyone know a fix for this?  The computer autologs in so i really need to delay the loading of BOINC.  A minute or two would be more than enough.

I think you'd need to change the runlevel for BOINC (to not start until in graphical mode) and then as one of the last services to start within that run level.

See if bum (Boot-Up Manager) can help

There is a way of delaying when a program starts. I think it is in the init.d or a similar directory. I have never done it through a GUI though.

Yipee!! Finally got it working :crazy. It was as simple as adding Boinc to the video group. According to this thread http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3564 (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3564) I may have to redo it after a restart. They try to explain ways to make it stick at the end of the thread but I can't make heads nor tails of it. Doesn't help that they're talking about different flavours of Linux to mine either.
But that's OK. That comp would probably average a couple of weeks between restarts so it's not a major problem biggrin

The last post on that link has the code I was looking for in my last post.

"So i Put in my /etc/rc.d/boinc"
[ ! -z $1 ] && [ $1 = "start" ] && sleep 60

The sleep command makes next "step" pause for 60 seconds, in this case. The 60 can be replaced by any whole number but some years ago the timing was taken from an internal counter that may already be near the end of a second so using 1 as the sleep period may have almost no affect. Unless that bug was fixed.

Ok cant work out how to make this work under Kubuntu 9.04.
i found boinc_client in /etc/rc5.d and added that line.  All it does is pause the entire boot for 60 seconds and still has the same issue.  I somehow need to move boinc to be one of the last things to load if not the last thing?
Have i messed something up or does anyone else have another idea?

So many flavors of Linux there has to be 5 ways to do the same thing lol.

Did you have a look at Boot-Up Manager (bum)?  It will let you change the boot order of services with ease.  Dunno about Kubuntu, but it's in the repositories for Ubuntu 8.10

Change boinc-client's boot priority at all run levels to 80 or so (anything higher than the gui)

Yipee!! Finally got it working :crazy. It was as simple as adding Boinc to the video group.

Hmm, I was hoping (when I saw this) that THIS might be the problem I am having (or more so this might be the SOLUTION to my problem..).

But there wasn't a group called "video". So I created one - no prob.

Then I went to add the user "boinc" to that group, but couldn't see a user with that name.

When I tried then, to create a user with the name "boinc", it tells me there is already a user with that name...

I REALLY REALLY want to get this GT9800 crunching GPUgrid.... the 9500 wasn't working either until the other day... I  followed the advice in the link that Rob has already posted, but I downloaded/ installed 6.4.5 from getdeb. unfortuneately thiat install didn't give me the option of "installing as a service or not", but upon the restart of the computer, boinc suddenly SAW the vid card and is SLOWLY grinding its way through GPU grid WU's. (very slowly).

I am starting to pull out what little hair I have left trying to get this 9800 working in boinc.... I want to try what Mike047 has suggested to me (but am worried about losing my close to "normal" screen resolution.. (took me weeks of fiddling to get it this close..)

Anyway, might be time to bight the bullet and just do what mike has suggested.

a Backup of xorg.conf will return me to the current "video settings/ resolution" etc wont it ? (though I guess I would have to have the same drivers in place as well.... which I want to remove - and start all over again...

THIS IS A PAIN - Why cant it just be "plug and work" ???  :pcwhack: :furious: :pcwhack: :hbang:

Thanks Yoda worked great :)  As for you veebee what method of altering users are you using mine was as simple as a tick box.

QuoteDunno about Kubuntu, but it's in the repositories for Ubuntu 8.10

Yep it's there. I installed & ran it earlier ;D. Boinc was at run level 20 & kdm was at 30, so I changed Boinc to 40. Haven't tested it yet though, want to try & catch it after it finishes & uploads a wu so if it all goes Pear shaped I wont lose too much work.

EDIT:Woohoo it worked biggrin. It did restart the current wu though, but it was only 5 minutes in so I guess it hadn't reached a checkpoint yet.
Thanks Yoda. It's good to finally have this running properly after all these months ;D

yeah, it's simply "ticking boxes"... to add a user to a group etc... my prob was when trying to create a user called"BOINC", to make a member of the group "video" (as per Rob's "simple as adding Boinc t the group "videos").

Anyways. Mike047's instructions worked first go, and also fixed my resolution problem at the same time !... killing two birds in Australia, with one stone...pretty good throw Mike !!! lol
