People,

Subject says it all I guess but boinc stopped working for me a few Fedora versions ago so has anyone installed Boinc on Fedora 14 x86_64?

Thanks,

Phil.

Welcome, Phil!

Last version I tried (successfully) was Fedora 11 I think. Are there errors or other failure info you can share?

I run successfully on latest Ubuntu/Kubuntu 64 bit releases. I know they are different to Fedora in many ways, but could you use one of them instead?

Cheers, Will

Will,

I use:

sudo boinc_client &
boincmgr

but it always fails trying to connect to the local host . . and I can't find any error messages anywhere . .

I'm not really interested in using another OS for my main work machine.

Thanks,

Phil.

Have you tried without sudo? I haven't needed to use it. In fact I don't need to start the client manually. I use 'run_manager &' and it starts the client and Boincmgr. Running this app with root on a work box might not be wise anyway?

I've seen a similar issue on Ubuntu. After a fresh install, the manager would sit connecting to localhost with no error and nothing in the Messages pane. Restarting Boincmgr made no difference. I needed to manually run the client (./run_client) then quit it with CtrlC after it showed the usual startup messages. From then on I could run Boincmgr normally with no issue.

Will,

Without sudo the client crashes:

SIGABRT: abort called

"run_manager" does not exist in the two RPMs.

"run_client" does not exist in the two RPMs.

Running "boinc" gives the same error above.

Unless I can find a Fedora user who has installed and is running successfully, I will need to give up I think . .
Thanks,

Phil.

Sounds similar to Boinc on Fedora 14 won't attach to project.

The poster solved his problem by uninstalling the version from the package manager and installing the version downloaded from Berkeley.

Good point kashi, I do that as well - the Ubuntu-provided version is also bad news.

Good luck Phil, it would be great to have more boincing if it will work!

Kashi,

I will give that solution a go but I hate installing outside of the packaging system . .

Thanks,

Phil.

I understand, I was the same when I used Linux. For some strange reason the BOINC included in Linux repositories often does not work properly and/or is an outdated version.
One person had so much continuing trouble with BOINC on Fedora that he chose to use WINE and Windows XP.  >:D
I think the fact that so many experience trouble with BOINC in Linux is one of the reasons that Dotsch developed his Dotsch/UX Linux BOINC distribution.
