BOINC - Trojan! Really?

Started by Latoof, July 12, 2011, 11:34:01 PM

Latoof

I have had all sorts of issues with my PC - running slow, crashing, rebooting.

tried to narrow things down by doing a selective start up and at first is seemed it was ATI drivers - removed reinstalled - looked OK for a little while,  Then KIS crashed twice with corrupt DB errors - reinstalled and with the latest scan I get a Trojan popup from KIS

Haven't yet restarted BOINC as it was disabled from start up during my troubleshooting

good find latoof -  +1 !

I wonder if this is why "Climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk" is  shut down and account data cannot be reached on the net.

Thanks for replies. I accepted KIS action and all seemed ok. But today the system is again unstable and locks up freezes. I'll give the cureit a go tonight

There is still something funky going on I'm sure. My hardware is solid. Memory ok. Even tried new RAM to be sure!

+1 to Sean for the link/advice

The safest step is a system rebuild, or restore from backup before you started running ClimatePrediction work units on this box.

If you have anything else on the LAN without firewall and up to date KIS, then it may be infected too. Depending on value of the information you store/access, you might want to take other precautions. You might also want to rebuild, patch, and install KIS without connecting to LAN, just in case the rebuilt box gets reinfected before it can have updates applied.

This is all over the top if you only have one box and it's just for BOINC. However, if you access online banking, connect to a work VPN, or store lots of personal data, then a little paranoia might go a long way!

Good luck sorting it out. Msg me if you want any specific assistance.

neither KIS, Trend house call or cureit find any issues but my PC is still out of whack!

Latoof what video card and driver are you using.

The system had been running Catalyst 11.3 without issues for a while however I did try the latest 11.6 when I started troubleshooting the system.  At the moment I have uninstalled all ATI related items and am running whatever Windows thinks is the right driver.  Not sure if that is a driver installed by/from MS during MS update or if it has just rolled back to an earlier ATI driver I have installed??

I ended up doing a complete removal of KIS and re-installation last night.  It seems stable today however I am still running a customised boot with no other non windows items in the start-up apart from KIS after the fresh install.

It is worth noting that up till this morning I had no restore points available!  :shock  Which was a bit of a surprise to say the least....  I can only assume that whatever was going on trashed my restore points at some point.

funnily enough, I went to do a "repair" on the sons computer and found the only repair point there, was earlier that DAY ! which meant "restoring it" to  a time when it HAD the problems it was experiencing at the time...
ended up doing a fresh install.

Well it seems my system is stable and no signs of malware or virus to be found.  I have chosen not to install new ATI drives - rather leave whatever Windows is happy with for the time being.
