BOINC crashes when selecting to add a new project

Recently my BOINC was losing internet connection about 5 minutes after every start; the PC itself still had an internet connection. I uninstalled and re-installed BOINC, but the internet connection continued to fail. I decided to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 which went fine. I then installed BOINC manager and the 'meta package for BOINC client...'. Now, when I select to add a project, when I go: Tools>Add project or account manager - select Add project>Next, BOINC just closes...no error mesage or anything. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing, but no change. I can't add a project, which makes this machine useless to me as I only use it for BOINC. I have downloaded the BOINC install file from the BOINC site, but when I select to run that, I get a message saying can't open as its corrupt.

Anyone any ideas?

In Ubuntu I have only used the version of BOINC from "sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager" which is not the most recent but it works ?

I found this message on SIMAP forum relating to BOINC errors on all tasks with Ubuntu 12.04. Similar messages are on other project forums.

No, It is not just your computer... Everyone who uses the default/"built-in version" of BOINC that came with Ubuntu 12.04 is having the same problem.

See the following threads for some insight and I would also suggest you bookmark and/or subscribe to them to keep abreast of what is happening and when a work-around or solution:

Ubuntu Update Manager update to 7.0.24 today caused many errors

Well, had a go at Dingo's suggestion and I was able to get the 'add a project' process to move to the 'existing user' of the selected project...then I get a meassage "Failed to add a project". I looked at the log but it makes no sense to me, which is expected 'cause I don't know anything about code. The message is:

"Fetching configuration file from [project address]
[error] can't create HTTP response output file get_project_config.xml"

I will type this into to Google and see what I get.

My dad was an engineer and he taught me how to 'subtly' use a hammer for stubborn issues.

After my newly installed 12.04 failed to behave properly, including locking on me constantly, I blew a fuse when it would not perform a warm reboot...I kicked the PC that hard I stove in some of the plastic face plates (and hurt my foot as well).

The end result?

I am now connected to the SIMAP project and downloaded numerous work units...BOINC (the Synaptic version as per Dingo's suggestion) finally worked correctly and all good. Well, not really, all WUs are 'computation error'...but at least that brings me up to speed with the rest of the BOINC community as per kashi's information.

*sigh*...the world of technology...

Finally got BOINC running with no errors (so far) on Ubuntu 12.10 just in time for the AA.

If anyone else encounters the same problem as me here's the site that tells you how to get the latest version (BOINC 7.0.28) that works: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=7598

But, looking at my PC now I notice it has reverted to 2 threads only, whereas it was at the start running all 4 threads.

PS. back to 4 threads now... biggrin
