Boinc Software - Installation/ re-installation

Hi fellow team-mates, I got a question or two that I was hoping you could help me with.  My older i7, is in desperate need of an overhaul & a fresh coat of windows.   

My problem is,   what's the easiest way to reinstall Boinc after a full format & fresh install of windows? (win7 x64)

Should I back up the Boinc data folder (C:\ProgramData\Boinc\*.*) before hand?  Then what?

Also this maybe a silly question but...  after I re-install,  how will the projects know this is the old machine & not a new one? Does it matter?

Has anyone done this before?  What was your outcome?  Any tips or methods for newbie re-installers to get up & running quickly?

Please help save me a headache & possible split CPID.  If people do Boinc long enough they must one day have the same problem.

I would reinstall Boinc after I'd reinstalled Windows.

To avoid a split CPID, just add every project to at least one running Boinc Manager, presumably the one just installed, and Boinc will find eventually find all the projects and sort out the CPID by itself.

The process can be hurried along a little by selecting the most correct project, selecting Update on the projects tab, wait a bit, then updating all the other projects.

In the unlikely case that you are not aware, all projects can be selected by selecting the one at the top, then holding down the shift key, then clicking on the one at the bottom, then clicking update.

Yes what Mike said.  Just run down all the work and / or abort any tasks you have on the PC before overhaul and reload Windows.

JN.  The way I changed from XP to win7-64 was to copy the BOINC Data onto a USB Stick and installed win7. when it asks where you want this installed, I chose to delete the partition that contained XP before or if you have  enough room or another hard drive  install it in a new partition.  (Partition Manager or similar program is  great for this and you can do this before the installation.)

When you finished with the installation of win 7, paste the contents of BOINC Data from your USB Stick to the ProgramData Directory.  Now download and install BOINC and it will automatically use the data that you used before. Some projects may not recognize the new installation in which case you just use the reset option and it will download the correct version for you.  In any case, I normally abort all currently running programs before I start the install.

Hi All,

At work, i've received a new computer (i5, but i can't install BOINC on it due to restricted admin privledges.
Is there anyway to run BOINC without an actual install?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

At work you should have the approval of the company to run BOINC on their computers.  It is their resource and that is why they stop users installing programs.  

If they approve but will not install the application you can use BOINC installed on a USB memory stick I believe using Linux.  Have a look at this link    http://www.dotsch.de/boinc/Dotsch_UX.html
