Compare linux XFCE vs Vista

Aside from my desktop (AMD quad/Nvidea/Kubuntu) I am running two identical oldish Dell laptops - Intel dual processor 2.0 GHz, pretty standard stuff - one on Win Vista, the other on XFCE linux (Xubuntu). There is a third identical one, in a sorry state but recoverable, currently loaded with Vista, but which will be reformatted etc. when operational. Both systems have been stripped back to the minimum, the Vista one is used as a jukebox part time. I run them at 100% processors (2 cores) and around 60-70% time for cooling depending on the weather.

My question: Which of the stats (BOINCstats) and other available info would be best to use to see which of the two operational ones is most productive, so I can then make a good choice of OS for the third? My preference is for XFCE, but from what I have seen so far the Vista one is performing well. Need to do this over a bit of time to let stats catch up with each other, but that's not a prob.

Have run the benchmarks in Boinc Manager where Vista gives ~1850 integer/3710 fp and xfce gives 1620 integer/3990 fp. I'd guess it varies with the different projects as to whether integer or fp are most critical, but i think I'd favour fp.

Any suggestions  would be much appreciated.  :thanks1: in advance.

This is your project list on BoincStats.   http://boincstats.com/en/stats/-1/user/detail/2554619/projectList    This is your host list from BoincStats  http://boincstats.com/en/stats/15/host/list/0/0/808715 but it is al  Windows machines....

It may not do you much good as some projects run Linux better than MIN and visa versa.  If you have the PC's on the same project that could give you a starting point but only for that project.

Not much help but others will have more advise I am sure.

Thank you both, clears it up a bit. As I thoght, it will take time, and maybe no definitive results after all. Can't find myself on BOINCstats either sometimes, Eagle. maybe that takes time too: Still a few bits missing. Anyhow, having FUN. :jester:

Yes Dingo the projects are favouring Win between the two laptops, getting more work and credits there, though the linux box is faster. GPU on the desktop gives it a big advantage. See if it equals out over time. No separate GPUs on the laptops. Seems to be a bit of a lull in available tasks at present, POGS and others.
