I'd love too, but all my rigs run on Yo ho ho versions of Win 7, so upgrading would cost me be an arm and a peg-leg.

Although I've read there may be special pricing for those running non genuine versions of windows as to get as many people as possible onto Bill's latest creation.

I have mucked around with a RTM version on a second PC - seems ok.  Updates are forced upon you, there's no option to switch updates "off".  The Solitaire card game is missing, so some people will be upset (lol).  I have my upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 "reserved" but nothing has happened yet....

No urge here to downgrade to Windows 10 or any other version for that matter.

Looked at it but haven't used anything but Ubuntu for the last 7 years

I have on one machine but that doesn't run BOINC so no feedback on that yet. The other is downloading now.

If you do upgrade, I recommend choosing the custom setup rather than express. There are at least three default settings for sharing information with others and you'll want to check that. Overall I'm happy with it. I've read there is going to be a big service release in a few weeks so you might want to wait until after that if your upgrade isn't urgent!

Intend to give it  try on my old Toshiba Laptop when Einstein finishes running on it.  It's a WIN 7 puter about 6 or 7 years old, so no loss if any problems...(and the wife's Solitaire isn't on it LOL).   :wink

I upgraded one of my PCs from Windows 8.1 Professional to Windows 10 Professional yesterday.
I used the media creation tool to download an ISO file that I burned to a DVD - I plan on using this to eventually upgrade my other PCs.
The upgrade went smoothly.
I had to download a new version of the driver for my Intel HD4600 GPU.
BOINC looks to be working correctly.
I didn't lose any of the CPU or GPU workunits that were in progress before the upgrade.
So far so good ....

Sounds like upgrade went well for you Daniel. Think I'll wait a while though before I upgrade my new computer to Windows 10.

Somewhat related but I need something to upgrade from, new computer I'm just starting to assemble has no OS yet. Will be dual booting with Linux Mint but need Windows for projects that are faster on Windows, or only have Windows application.

Was thinking that rather than mucking about inserting yo ho ho files into the BIOS, it'd be easier and less potential future trouble if I just bought a copy of Windows 8.1. A quick look and the cheapest I've found from a reputable site is Full Version - Download (ESD) for $113.41 from Technopolis. Download version needs no postage charge added. Anyone seen it for less than that from a non dodgy seller?

I know you won't like this answer but have you looked on ebay?  You may find a non-dodgy seller of Windows 8.1 at a cheaper price.

Now for my experience with Windows 10.  It's been about 3 weeks and so far, so good.  If you're looking to upgrade I say don't, unless you have a pressing reason to install Windows 10 or want to try something new just for the heck of it (like me lol).  I did an upgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit by creating an install ISO using the Media Creation Tool.  The upgrade did not complete fully, so I had to install Win 10 from scratch.  Luckily, I had gone far enough in the upgrade process that Win 10 activated itself automatically when I did the clean install.

Other things that I've noticed are that Win 10 drivers for older hardware could be a problem, so do some research before you upgrade and avoid a headache.  Bootup time is quicker than Win 7 (I have it installed on a SSD so that helps) and the GUI interface is a little bit different to Win 7 but still usable.  I've installed Classic Shell to get rid of the "Start Menu tiles" and to give me back a Win 7 like "Start" button and menu.  Also, some 3rd-party programs won't startup on boot (they did in Win 7), so they need to be added as a task in Task Scheduler.

I think that's about it for now.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Dataman

I have converted 2 machines with no problems. It looks different and functions are grouped differently. Some old features disappeared and the new ones are not useful to me. The only reason I did it was it was free. I turned off all the features that I could. On the other hand, "Edge" (the new browser) is HORRIBLE!!! It exists only to collect user data so Microsoft can sell the information. I stopped using it and went back to IE.  :panic:

Dingo

I tried it a while back but put my story in another topic.  see HERE

Not in the least interested as I have two computers up and running just the way I like them.  Maybe down the track I will most likely flick over.

Its good to read the updates on fellow crunchers who have done the switch and providing some tricks and tips to ensure smooth sailing.
