DENIS@Home Update

Got it working on my desktop but farrrrrrrrrkkk!
Had to do a full OS upgrade AND recompile Boinc which required recompiling wxWidgets AND a double reinstall of libnotify.
At least I can shut down the VM.

Now to upgrade the headless machine and see if that works.

Abruraspingi

Great work. Make sure you post those steps on the forum. Sounds like quite the rigmarole

They won't help most people.  I run a custom compiled client because I run it in a different spot than the default from the distribution and had nothing but trouble with the Boinc data directory location when running the one from the repos.
The headless machine only required an automated o/s update and it also updated the installed Boinc client.
Start by getting the machine fully up to date
sudo apt update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade --fix-missing -y && sudo apt autoremove -y && sudo apt clean -y

For the headless machine I first had to change the upgrade target to "normal" instead of "lts"

sudo nano /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

Just change
Prompt=lts
to
Prompt=normal

Next just set the upgrade going
sudo do-release-upgrade
and let it do it's thing, a couple of questions on the way through, then reboot and you're done.

Denis is pushing out a bunch more work and is actively working on the connection and stats issues.  We might get our first update for the year overnight.

Dark Angel

They seem to have pulled their thumbs out of their arses and fixed the stats permission issue.

btw, we're in second place in the FB marathon on this project.  You're welcome.

Abruraspingi

I do like crunching Denis and considering how common heart disease is I'm glad to help with research on it.

I do like how active Jesus is within the forums

Dark Angel

I like how active he is
I do NOT like how much it takes to get the uni cybersec children to fix the things they actively messed up.

Morning, All,

Well tried to connect a Linux Mint machine this morning, but could not connect, so I tried their website and it wouldn't play the game.

So I will try again later.

Yes, I do like this project

Their server has crapped itself again.

Abruraspingi

More technicians that eat blue crayons?

Dark Angel

That was someone's high school art graduate kid at WCG, but the principle does apply.

Morning, All,

Even though they are out of work at the moment, I was able to connect to Denis@Home on my Linux Mint machine.

Seems they have fixed the issue.

Their stats have stopped exporting again though.

Quote[DENIS@Home] New version with checkpoints // Nueva versión con checkpoints
Dear Volunteers,

Over the past few weeks, we have been testing the server and the new application developed by Iván. After verifying that the application is running well and having a general idea of the server's limits for the application, we have just launched a new version. This new version includes checkpoints so that we can run longer simulations without issues arising from restarts. Debugging checkpoints has always been one of the most challenging aspects when developing new versions, so we will be monitoring how things progress gradually. It will remain in beta mode, so please be patient if this leads to tasks that are not validated or other types of problems. One of the risks at this stage is that if the simulation does not restart correctly at the checkpoint, it becomes corrupted and the results will not match those submitted by other volunteers.

Thank you very much to everyone who is running our beta version. Without this validation, it would be unthinkable to be able to advance towards creating better simulations.

Sincerely,
Jesús.

===============================================================

Atentamente,
Jesús.

Quote[DENIS@Home] We haven't forgotten about you // No nos hemos olvidado de vosotros
Dear volunteers,
First of all, please accept my apologies for this long period without any news from us. At the end of last academic year, two events occurred that blocked us from moving forward with the work we were doing in DENIS: on the one hand, Iván finished his grant and started working at a company; and on the other hand, the Rector of the University asked me to take on a Vice-Rector position for this academic year. This latter responsibility has meant that, since the beginning of the year, all my working time has been completely overtaken by this new role. Yesterday in a meeting, someone made me realize that I have already been in the position for six months! In this new situation, time goes by incredibly fast, and I am sometimes unaware that, from the outside, it must seem like a very long period.

My sincere apologies for not having shared any updates earlier. For quite some time I have had several tasks on my list of things to post here, and I kept saying nothing with the intention of completing them before reporting back... but as you can see, so much time has passed.

Marta Gómez has published an article which, although it has not been counted within DENIS, she uses the same simulator that we know is robust and reliable thanks to the large battery of tests we conducted with you. We still have to complete a few more simulations from Iván's work, but what we already have looks very promising, and we would like to submit it to a conference at some point. I also need to finish some aspects of the model optimization work, and I have pending simulations that I want to resume when possible. I hope to stabilize myself in the new position and manage my administrative duties alongside my research, but for now, it seems we will have to take a break here for a while. I hope to resume this project as soon as possible.

Thank you very much to all of you for still being here. Even if I don't show it often, I never forget about you (which is impossible, given all the good things you have contributed).

Kind regards,
Jesús
