The Autralian and Canadian Defence Force still used Cobal coded programs with Java and phython add ons when I worked on them in the 90's and as far as I know the they still do.  Cobal was fairly easy so you would think todays programmers would pick it up quite easily.  You should apply, always good to be able to use old expierience and knowledge.

I learnt FORTRAN 77 when I was studying engineering at university. I think COBOL was more for the students studying economics?

COBOL originally was developed on a design by Grace Hopper a US Navy captain with the Department of Defense. It was for business use by Banks, Insurance Companies, Accounting Firms and, of course, Governments.

Haha, I remember learning a bit of COBOL when I did first year Chartered Accountancy in 1972. After we learned a little of it, as an exercise we had to code a program to add interest to overdue accounts.

My notoriously poor memory tells me Cobol = COmmon Business Orientated Language.
