Heads up...I've awoken to idle PC's due to another Windows 10 update.

Thanks. They have been frequent lately. Been a lot for Ubuntu too but at least they do not force one to do it.

I had the new update stop on a reboot and had to uninstall it.  I did it manually, I downloaded and rebooted when told as opposed to Windows rebooting in the middle of the night,  and it worked OK.

Well - having had Win 10 version 2004 thrust upon me after my hardware failure, I attempted to upgrade various software that remained untended during the hardware modifications.

I installed the latest BOINC, and had endless fun time fighting with Microsoft about having the installation "activated". Their last effort was a one-hour+ session with someone apparently in Washington trying every which-way to "activate" the product. Eventually, that person simply gave up.

So, a ten-second Googling and the appropriate registry fix was found.

Then install the 1Tb M.2 device because my old SSD was running out of space (not helped by second-class installers which don't provide a choice of install directory).

And of course, the cloning software to transfer the old SSD to the M.2 object shows an error screen. Kingston refers me to Acronis, and vice-versa. Turns out Acronis was detecting old installation data (I'd given up on Acronis in 2016 when their new software version removed the facility to search for a file and you needed to know which backup it was in to recover it) but the Acronis "support" person wouldn't just tell me that as the new install was an OEM version (but how about you upgrade...)

All was OK for a few days. Then the system just stopped. Frozen stiff. Mouse wouldn't move, keyboard was ignored. Drive-activity light sometimes blinking, sometimes off., sometimes continuously on.

O.K., So reboot. works fine for a while, then rinse & repeat.

After a couple of days, I decided to go back to scratch. Re-install W10. Then re-install all of the software packages from over the years. Long-forgotten passwords, licences - the whole kit & boodle. Most of a week evaporates doing that.

Works fine for a couple of days, then the freezing problem raises its head again. Occasionally, the mouse and keyboard are able to get in, but there appears to be nothing unexpected. Except that the system-idle task is hogging the CPU. Eh, what?

So I turn off BOINC.

Not had a problem since (he says, tempting fate).

Anyone heard of BOINC + version 2004 + some project causing such problems?

Yeah, I haven't heard good things about the 2004 update. Blue screens and other driver issues. Not a good look Microsoft!

Since the last update my laptop has had all sorts of problems with connections to the work servers. 🤦‍♂️
Trouble with SIP, Spark, proxy's, etc and Java seemed to just disappear!
It took 30 minutes to sort out today. grrr.

Boinc seems okay -- so far.

Recently updated 2 of my PC's to windows 10 2004 and had all kinds of freezing problems, no matter what software was being used.  :compbash:

Had to do complete reinstall's going back to 1909 and all is good again.

I will wait a few months before trying again for 2004.

Even worse when you have 19 Win10 machines.  :wink

It has been going on since June and all because Microsoft is pushing the Edge browser that no sane person uses. Now it has "features" that Firefox had 5 years ago. I am so tired of deleting it from desktop and taskbar.

Firefox all the way! I've been using it for years.

Hi guys, in Windows, isn't there a way to centralise the updates? Similar to running a corporate network.
I'll do some Googling.

Hi Mike,

I think what you are referring to is- Settings -  Delivery Optimization option?  I'm not sure how well it works though.

@Dataman - Yes 19 pc's is even worse. I totally agree with the ramming of Edge down our throats. Hate it. I have had no issues though like some of you are having (thank the lord!!)  v:

Yeah, I set it up and will see what it does. 🤷‍♀️
