Power prices 2022

As a avid cruncher, this really concerns me.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-04-29/power-pain-as-bills-tipped-to-rise-40-per-cent-on-surging-prices/101023488

I was told the other day that power prices are going to rocket again. We also did some calculations and I'm basically using everything I'm producing so I don't really get a rebate. ($50 for 95 days is all we got back in solar rebates)
I hate to say it but I can see myself having to readjust and perhaps only crunch CPU OR GPU instead of both at a time...... purely for the amount of power I'm using and my hip pocket.

I'll try & hold out but I just had my meter read on Friday, so there's more pain about to arrive in the mail  :bloodshot

By rough cals..... around 1400W crunching GPU's, or CPU somewhere around 1000W (these are very rough numbers) So 2400W, 24/7 just isn't sustainable for my family finances.
Efficiency will become more of a focus for my future crunching I think.  To make it worse.... the next generation of GPU's are really starting to push the limits of power draw.

"Mounting reports indicate that the RTX 4000 GPU could demand up to 600W from your gaming PC's power supply."
A lot of people will need to upgrade their PSU soon.

How does everyone else feel about power prices increasing?

I don't like it. I only have one PC which I crunch on, and typically only CPU projects.
PC1: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X @3.4GHz, 128GB DDR4, RTX3070, RTX3060, Linux Mint 21.2 64-bit
PC2: Lenovo M700 SFF, Intel i5-6400 @2.7GHz, 16GB DDR3, Intel graphics, Linux Mint 21.2 64-bit

I'm with AGL and they contacted me recently and suggested moving to their Super Saver program. The drop in prices is saving me a very noticeable amount.
BPay is still using my old amounts for payments and now there $67.32 credit on electricity and $198.54 credit on gas.
So I'm happy.

Well, I have already posted my situation with PG&E.

GREED!

I ended upgoing with Energy Australia here in Young NSW.  Ithere were three different options and this one is the best for me I think as I have off peak Hot Water.

Electricity rates
Daily supply charge
$1.5290 per day
Peak Usage:   29.9343 cents/kWh
Other rates such as Off Peak / Dedicated Circuit usage:   15.2559 cents/kWh.

Not sure how off peak works but I believr that during the night the off-peak rates apply and all electricity used in the home is on that rate ?  I have not had a bill yet so will have to wait and see what the damage is.  I am paying $100 a fortnight to my account as Energy Australia has a 6% discount if your bill is paid early or on time.

On their SuperSaver program AGL are charging Supply charge per day $1.31593 General use KWh $0.29326 and my last 33% Pay On Time Discount was $52.83cr. No mention of peak or  off peak.

Hmm, that doesn't look to bad. Anyone getting a better rate???

@ Dingo, I had some Indian call center suggesting I swap to Energy Australia.  Did you know that both EA & Alinta are owned by Hong Kong/Chinese? I didn't.
Not a fan of supporting my money going overseas but it's a tough call when every $$ counts these days. :(

Mike - I'm with Alinta Energy. I have found it INCREDIBLY difficult to compare plans because they all have sooooo many variables! It's a joke really.
With Alinta Home SaverPlus  28 plan that I'm on, it's 0.28c/kwh & a connection charge of $1.16/day. I do get a discount for early payment but they don't disclose how much on my bill  By my calculations it's around 25% discount but that sounds very high... but not much different from yours.
It's right there in black & white though on my last bill.... Total = $1283.00 Pay on time discount = $342.00 credit. I ended up paying $941.00 (This is ridiculously high imo and that's what scares me about power prices increasing. FYI - This bill was for 95 day from Oct - Jan so the air con was running pretty much 24/7.

@Dingo - Those rates you quoted sound much higher than what the Indian guys were quoting me from EA. it was something like less that $1/day and about 23c/kwh. Not sure if there's an early payment discount though so it's all swings & roundabouts.
So bloody confusing these days.

Dingo

I think they have different plans depending on where you live.  If you go to their web site the first thing it asks for is a postcode.  Those rates I gave are the cheapest I could get here in the bush.  When I get my forst bill I will let you know

Oh ok Dingo.
This is what I get for my postcode.

Daily supply charge
Before discount
$1.0175 per day
After 14% discount
$0.8751 per day
Usage rates
Peak usage per day
Before discount
23.5565 c/kWh
After 14% discount
20.26 c/kWh

When I punched in the numbers from my existing power bill, the saving was $11.00 difference.
See...swings & roundabouts

There are two government comparison sites that showed up in a search.
A Victoria Government site:
https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/

A Federal Government site:
https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/

It seems that the AGL plan I use doesn't show up in the results though. <face palm>

Yeah I hear ya.

I turned all my crunchers off on Tuesday, am doing a bit of trial an error, so I can stay in budget, and with the beautiful weather we are still having here in Perth, well what a difference it makes to the daily usage.

I recorded a usage of 7.24 kw for Wednesday, mind you, during the day, 2 kids at School and 2 Parents at Work.  I basically knocked of 10 kws of the daily usage.

Mind you only a 2 computers (not crunching) and 2 fridges running during the day, so thats why it is so low, I even get lower when we have gone away for holidays.

It bumps up on the weekends, when we everybody is at home.

Time to start a trial and error - Run 1 Machine (20 cores) between 0900 and 1600 only and only on a project where I can suspend work, like WCG, Universe, I think SIDOCK maybe.  LHC (Sixtrack only) others require constant internet connection and constant running.

By the way, I have a 6.6KWH Solar Array on my Roof, which at the moment, starts generating power from 0800 to 1700, (optimum is 0900 to 1600), in Summer, its 0700 to 1800

Cheers and Happy Crunching.

Oh boy... If I've done my math right.... and I think it's pretty straight forward.... when my new electricity rates are going to increase in September, my bill will go up by $300/quarter! *edit - That's $300.00 on my lowest bill! Summer time it will be way more!!  That's insane!  :boom:

Current rate with Alinta = 28.028c/kWh
New rate = 33.462c/kWh

:cry

I got an email from my provider to say that because I just stated 6 months ago my bill will not go up for another six months.  Cureently paying $0.2993430 per Kwh and $1.529 for the privalege of having power to my home.

I live with my mum (I'm her carer) and we are with Energy Australia. My mum is old school - she hates change!  So I'll be sticking with Energy Australia for a while...

BUT the good thing is I have access to my mums online energy account and recently signed up to a discounted plan for 12 months, RIGHT before the news announced the price hikes etc. It will be interesting to see what the new rates will be after the plan ends.

Seriously though, as Cruncher Pete said, there is no real need for the price hike.  It is greed - pure and simple. They can blame the war in Ukraine and other factors, but just take a look at the record profits the big miners make like BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto. It's incredible. And who pays for those record profits?  You and I do.

@Dingo - Gee that connection fee is high. My Alinta letter says it's going from 116c to 117c daily charge.
