Help needed for boinc and linux..

Ok, a call for help for all you Linux experts out there..

1.It's been ages since I fiddled with any linux, assume a very BASIC linux knowledge on my behalf.
2. Have installed Linux Mint 64bit.. Ubuntu based, but I really like the look and feel of it (so far!)
3. BOINC is up and running..

My problem is, BOINC Manager won't open..  The system monitor says it's running, but the window won't appear.  (It did appear the first time to attach, but only after I clicked on "boinc" and then on "boincmgr" in the BOINC folder..
I can see the WU's running in the system monitor, but only if I click on "boinc" not when I click on "boincmgr" first.

This says to me the manager is not connecting to the client ???

Any help appreciated..

Hmm, I am not a Linux expert and haven't run Mint, but if this happened in Ubuntu, I'd try and kill BOINC Manager, then try to run it again.

Or you could just try alt-tab to see if you can get to it?

Mike Mitchell

You might need to run boinccmd start or a similar command (I'm a bit too tired to be thinking straight at the moment). The command was posted on the forum before and if I'm not mistaken it was posted by Yoda.

Hmmm...

alt-tab doesn't get me into it.. killing it and then trying again gets me no-where either..

When I first boot up and start up boincmgr it opens up and stays stuck on "connecting to client", if I then click on 'boinc' it connects and I can see all projects and WU etc.. BUT once I close the manager window I cannot open it up again unless I reboot and repeat the proceedure.

If on boot up I click on 'boinc' first then on 'boincmgr' the manager window does not open at all. (but does appear in 'system monitor')

Stumped here..  ???

How did you install it BF? Through synaptic or via a manual install?

Manual install.  Downloaded it to the desktop, ran it, and it put the BOINC folder on the desktop for me.

Do you see a file called "Run BOINC"? Double click that to start the BOINC manager. Then, if the client does not connect, on the Advanced Menu choose "Shut down connected client". Then in the box that opens, type localhost for the computer name (hopefully it will insert the password automatically). Then click OK. Does the client start then? If not, then close the BOINC Manager and simply double click Run BOINC again, and it should start with the correct client.

I can see two files called "Run Client" and "Run Manager"..

Tried your suggestion Wang, but end up with the same problem:  I cannot open BOINC Manager again once I close it..  The manager process is running, I can see it in the System Monitor, but the window refuses to be seen the second time round.  I installed Mint on my laptop as well to see if I could replicate the problem, but it works fine on my laptop, I can open and shut the manager at will there.

The problem computer is a Q6600..

Could you be running multiple desktops, and are looking at the wrong one?

BF

Nope, that's one of the first things I checked..

But have SOLVED IT..   The problem was the BOINC version I was using..  I stupidly installed the Development Version 6.6.36..  re-installed BOINC with 6.4.5 and the problem has gone away..

Thanks for your thoughts and help though  Wang!  +1

Problems like this usually make me learn more..  Will run with Mint for while to see if I can increase my linux knowledge a bit!
