Runs on a Nvidia GPU too

Hi all,

I think it's worth noting that this runs on a CUDA capable Nvidia GPU card also.

Hmm, I'm half tempted to get a new video card...    Cheaper than a new CPU.

IF that will work on Linux (I'm not going to buy and install Windows)

Just had a look and it's not half bad.  Around $200 for a 9800GT.

Rob

In theory it works on Linux, but personally I had a lot of trouble, but then I'm a Linux idiot biggrin.
Firstly you have to download the latest Boinc version from Berkely, then the latest cuda drivers from NVIDIA ( I had a hell of a time getting these to install)
I eventually got it all working for a few weeks then had to reinstall the OS & couldn't get it working again  :( It couldn't find the libcodart file despite it being where it was supposed to be ::). Anyway, I've given up on it for now & have reverted to the repository version of BOINC. I'm hoping when the next version of K/Ubuntu comes out in a few months it'll have a Cuda capable BOINC available from the repositories which should simplify things :)

I've got 13,765 credit in 2 days on a 8800gt 512mb

edit: i've got a little less than half that on my ps3.

Hmm, so if I ran two of those cards in a box that's currently doing 9-10k a day on Milkyway (Q6600 on Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P) I could more than double its output for around $400 (or around $500 if I need a bigger PSU).  Tempting.

Audionut

Yeah.  I don't take much convincing to buy new gear.  So this is all the incentive I need to buy a new card.   :crazy

BF

I've been running this for 12 days on a single 9800GT, and have racked up 75k in that time.. Not too shabby!!  :shock

Okay.... have a recommended driver.....

have downloaded the latest "GPUGRID" BOINC............. but how the heck do I install it in Ubuntu??

Oh... and keep it simple folks.... dumb Gnat here ya know

edit: okay... remembered the 'sudo' command, but got a message about where to put it...... just where does BOINC go in Ubuntu, or any Linux distro for that matter.

It's a bit complicated, so it's hard to make it easy for ya...   File names for BOINC also changed a while ago, so that complicates matters further.

The standard *buntu installation of BOINC splits the files across a few directories.  But the "program" files would be:

usr/bin/boinc
usr/bin/boinccmd
usr/bin/boincmgr

Data is kept in /var/lib/boinc-client/

The easiest method for me is to download 6.4.5 and put it in a folder created in Home.  Run it from there.  The only downside is that it will not start on its own...you will have to start it manually.  I have a link to the folder on the desk top and open it and click BoincMgr to start it.

The easiest method for driver installation is to boot to recovery[esc while booting] and go to the root....install and reboot.

You need to install build-essential by terminal before attempting driver installation.

Don't forget the IA32-libs.

Piece of cake biggrin

Very good chance...  Although it would probably be easiest to set up in Windoze :(

My card is listed ill give it a go.... hope my PSU can handle this card at full power as its only a 550W running a quad and watercooling as well.

Edit: Downloading the latest boinc for 'doze now as im about to play games.  lets see what a 240 core 1Gb RAM GPU can do  :cheer1:

All i can say is wow i need to move this lowly  :shock GTX 280 to my server....it should be ok for a server right :jester: and get me a GTX 295 for my games machine.  22k from the card already and it wasnt running properly until recently, im running high end games in the background and i only have it working in 'doze.  Seems i cant find a recent enough .deb to run CUDA in 'nix and ive forgtten how to instal the normal boinc over the one from ubuntu.  Any hint apreciated as id hate to let this baby get cold and the server is pure 'nix so if i do buy a 295 and move the 280 i cant use it yet  :thanks1:

Kinda open things up to a new sorta cruncher doesnt it.... Say a quad with 2 or 3 GPU's to make good use of available space if u have problems with that like i do.  I can just see my sever now lol its gonna need that 1kw PSU

Edit: How do i get my boincstats siggy back? i kinda forgot.
